Summary

  • The Starfield Community Patch team is struggling to find volunteers to maintain the project.
  • The ambitious patch—boasting over 355,000 downloads on Nexus Mods alone—was last updated in September 2024.
  • If no one steps forward in the near future, the Starfield Community Patch team will have to retire the project.

The Starfield Community Patch team is struggling to find volunteers to help maintain the project and ensure its long-term viability. The current situation is a discouraging sign for Bethesda's space-faring game, hinting that Starfield may lack the staying power of the studio's earlier open-world RPGs.

Originally released in September 2023, Starfield debuted to somewhat mixed reviews. In June 2024, Bethesda released the game's official modding tools, called the Creation Kit. By that time, the Starfield Community Patch—which addresses a wide variety of issues with the game—was already out. However, the Creation Kit's release prompted a large-scale rework of the mod.

Starfield Reveals May 2025 Update Patch Notes

Bethesda reveals an upcoming Starfield update for May 2025, which can currently be downloaded by gamers who participate in the Steam beta.

The future of the Starfield Community Patch now seems to be in question, as its team reported that its core members are losing interest in maintaining the project. That's according to a recent post shared via the Starfield Modding Discord server by Community Patch developer Pickysaurus. As spotted by GamesRadar+, Pickysaurus posted a notice seeking contributors who would take over the development of the ambitious mod. According to them, the current team no longer has the "time or motivation to curate the patch."

Starfield Community Patch Hasn't Been Updated Since 2024

Pickysaurus's notice followed fan questions about why the Community Patch hasn't seen any progress since September 2024. For reference, similar mods for much older Bethesda games continue to receive regular support; the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch was last revised in February, while its Fallout 4 equivalent was most recently updated in March 2025.

Elaborating on the current situation, Pickysaurus said their reduced involvement stems from getting a new puppy, who now takes up much of their attention. Meanwhile, other team members stepped away for various reasons, including disappointment with the game's limited replay value and frustration over Bethesda’s attempts to monetize Starfield mods via the Creation Club. Some former Starfield Community Patch developers don't have any major gripes with the space-faring RPG, but have simply moved on to playing other games and no longer have an interest in maintaining such an ambitious project, Pickysaurus explained.

Starfield Community Patch Is at Risk of Being Retired

Given the current state of affairs, the Starfield Community Patch is going to be retired if the team doesn't find any volunteers in the near future. Anyone interested in taking over the project can get in touch with the current developers via the Starfield Modding Discord server. For the time being, the current team is still maintaining the Starfield Community Patch website, StarfieldPatch.dev, though this won't continue indefinitely. The fact that one of the most popular Starfield mods—boasting over 355,000 downloads on Nexus Mods alone—is struggling to maintain a core development team suggests that Bethesda's 2023 RPG may not enjoy the same long-lasting community support as the studio's earlier titles.
