Bethesda's latest game Starfield may be the studio's first RPG taking place in space, but it has a few mechanics that have returned from The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games. Fall damage is something that Starfield players will need to look out for when traversing the mountainous landscapes of planets.

It may be tempting to jump off high terrain after climbing for so long, but landing from a great height can kill the protagonist. This guide will show players how to completely avoid fall damage with the right gear and will detail which perks are needed to decrease how much fall damage the player's character will take.

How To Avoid Fall Damage In Starfield

There are two methods in Starfield that can be used to avoid fall damage. The first is to simply not jump off a platform from a high height, and the second is to use boost packs. While it may be difficult to determine how high is too high when planets have different levels of gravity, having access to boost packs can quickly diminish the risk associated with potential fall damage.

Boost packs act as temporary jetpacks for players to get more distance from a jump or gently fall to the ground. Boost packs can be found on some wearable packs, and players can get one early through the Constellation Pack earned by completing main missions. Players can use the boost packs by pressing and holding the Jump button while in midair, though the character will start to ascend the longer the button is held.

However, players will not be able to use boost packs until they spend at least one Skill Point in Boost Pack Training, located in the first row of the Tech tree. Players can then further upgrade the perk with more Skill Points for boost packs to use less fuel and regenerate more quickly.

If players do happen to jump from extreme heights with a pack that does not include a boost pack, there are ways to lessen how much fall damage they will take. The first is by spending Skill Points into the Gymnastics perk located in the second row of the Physical skill tree. Players will have to spend three Skill Points to get the maximum bonus of 30% less fall damage.

Players can also earn gear and other items that can lessen fall damage. The Constellation Guide 01 note will permanently reduce fall damage by 5% and can be found when visiting the Lodge for the first time; it will be sitting on the table in front of the Artifact display.

Starfield is available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
