Starfield is a sci-fi title from Bethesda, and it explores life in the Settled Systems shortly after warfare between the Freestar Collective and the United Colonies. Since it launched, it has been received well critically, and it currently sits with a Metacritic score of 83. This is a good sign for a franchise that is primed to only grow.
Starfield can grow its footprint through its upcoming DLCs. Shattered Space has been unveiled already and is set to release in Fall 2024. As the world grows and the franchise overcomes its early-day growing pains, Starfield is set to only accumulate more fans.

Starfield Will Receive More Expansions
The world of Starfield is massive, with over a thousand moons and planets to explore. The universe is populated with different settlements and factions to color the various worlds. Starfield’s world will grow even bigger with its upcoming expansions.
The first one, Shattered Space, is focused on House Va’ruun, a faction that was mysteriously neglected in the core game. House Va’ruun members believe in the Great Serpent and the mystical powers of grav jumping. From the reveal trailer, it appears the expansion will introduce many horror elements to the game.
It hasn’t been revealed how many Starfield expansions there will be, but it is possible to make an educated guess from looking at past Bethesda franchises. The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim received 3 expansions, namely:
- Dawnguard
- Hearthfire
- Dragonborn
On the other hand, 2015’s Fallout 4 received 6 expansions. They came in the form of 3 story-based DLCs and 3 workshop add-ons.
- Automatron
- Wasteland Workshop
- Far Harbor
- Contraptions Workshop
- Vault-Tec Workshop
- Nuka-World
The game also received a Hi-Res Texture Pack DLC. It can be expected that Starfield will have between 3 and 6 expansions based on past trends. All these expansions give Starfield the chance to flesh out its lore and give fans more to think about. It also provides world-building abilities and the chance for players to learn about the Settled Systems’s technology and alien life.
Overcoming Starfield’s Growing Pains
Starfield is Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years. This puts a lot of pressure on the game to be an outstanding title. It has satisfied the expectations of many players, though some have been left feeling underwhelmed. This has led to Starfield being review-bombed.
The review-bombing reduced the game’s user score, but it has been improved by subsequent updates that have added new features, including a new Extreme difficulty and the ability to play at 60FPS. A lot of the updated features are ones that players have been requesting for a while. If Bethesda continues to listen to players, the franchise should continue to grow.
There’s also many questions that surround Starfield’s world in terms of lore. It’s clear that expansions are one of the best ways to answer these questions, as Shattered Space appears to solve some of the mystery surrounding the House Va’ruun faction. With future updates, players may discover if humans are the only intelligent alien species in the Settled Systems which could add a whole new element to Starfield’s universe.
Will there be a Starfield Sequel?
A Starfield sequel hasn’t been confirmed by Bethesda. However, if there is one on the way, players will have to wait a while as The Elder Scrolls 6 is in production, and a new Fallout game has been confirmed to be one of Bethesda’s planned projects. The sequel will have a much larger fan base than its predecessor if subsequent expansions are continually released and the game receives a lot of post-launch support.
The sky is the limit for Starfield, and the franchise has a lot of room to grow. With each Starfield DLC, the game will improve which will naturally increase the desire for a sequel. There are still many mysteries the Settled Systems hold, and waiting for answers gives players something to look forward to.
