Starfield gives players immense freedom to explore as most Bethesda games do. The first ship is not worth much for traveling or fighting space battles. Players should be on the lookout for better ships as soon as they can afford them. With a whole galaxy's worth of secrets to discover it's a good idea to grab one capable of jumping long distances. Gamers looking to begin a life of piracy should look for ways to smuggle contraband in their cargo hold. Players may stumble into ships that they can't pilot because they are Class B or C ships.

Ship Classes Explained

The class ranking of a ship is not necessarily tied to its speed, size, or firepower. When viewing ships the class will be displayed next to the reactor. This is because the Reactor is the only part that determines the class. Equipping more powerful reactors will cause the ranking to go up on a ship. The rankings are A as the lowest power, B as the middle, and C as the most powerful ship reactors.

Class A ships will only be able to equip A parts. Class B ships can use both A and B parts. Class C ships can use all parts. Higher rank parts will require the Starship Design skill to be leveled up to purchase and equip them. The bigger the reactor the more energy can be slotted into the ship systems. Bigger ships will require more power to fly them, but they are not necessarily the best. Players can still make smaller class B and C ships that are capable of tackling the harsh galaxy in Starfield.

Rank Up the Piloting Skill

The player character will be restricted from piloting B and C-class ships until they have ranked up their piloting skill. This skill is on the first row of the Tech section of the perk tree, so it can be invested in immediately. Certain companions will have piloting skills, but these will not affect using higher rank ships. The companion skills will only add some maneuverability to the ship when flying with them. Like all skills, each rank has a challenge required to get to the next level.
