Summary

  • Pressing the Xbox right bumper in Starfield reveals system names on the map, a feature added in a previous update.
  • One player only realized this after playing the game for 18 months.
  • Long-time players may have missed this game-changing function and have used mods instead.

A Starfield player online has made a very helpful realization after 18 months of playing the game. While this is something some Starfield players may already be aware of, it could be of use to others who don't know that this exists.

Because Starfield is such a massive game, it doesn't necessarily give players all the information they need. It's a game about exploration, so it makes sense that the expectation is that players will find a lot of things out by themselves. This can lead to gamers not noticing things that, to others, might seem obvious, especially after long playtimes. For example, some Starfield players took a while to notice that they can rename guns after launch, as again, the game does not exactly explain it. There are ups and downs to this approach - players may miss out on some vital information, but it also gives the game a steeper and more satisfying learning curve.

Starfield might be a fledgling franchise compared to Fallout, but it already has one big advantage over its post-apocalyptic cousin.

Redditor djwoske noticed, after playing the game for 18 months, that by pressing the right bumper on the Xbox controller, players can see the names of systems on the in-game map. According to the player, they had been using online maps to travel across the galaxy, and only made the helpful time-saving realization after searching for a Starfield mod to solve their problem. They then lamented why there isn't a tooltip at the bottom of the map by default, as it could have saved them plenty of time in the long run.

It wasn't exactly their fault, though. Another user pointed out that it was a quality-of-life addition as part of a Starfield update from a while ago, so it makes sense that some who have been playing since launch wouldn't expect it to be there. This could explain why it's never explicitly told to players, too, with it being a post-launch addition. Plenty of users shared the fact that they had been using a mod for the same functionality, thanking djwoske for sharing the tip.

Bethesda continues to provide updates for Starfield almost two years after its release. Despite a mixed reception from players, the studio has remained committed to its sci-fi RPG, and there's still more to come. According to one insider, Starfield is still set to launch on PlayStation 5 later this year, after initially only launching on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
