Summary

  • Starfield's upcoming update, Update 1.9.67, focuses on technical fixes and stability improvements rather than new gameplay features.
  • The update may address the FormID issue that has affected many players and is considered one of the biggest bugs since the game's launch.
  • The release date for Update 1.9.67 is unknown, but players on Steam can opt in to beta test it early.

Starfield has launched preliminary patch notes for its upcoming update, which is currently being beta tested by a select number of players on Steam. Though Starfield had a successful launch, and is considered to be the least buggy Bethesda release in the Creation Engine era, fans haven't been too thrilled with some of its gameplay aspects, such as Starfield's over-reliance on procedural generation.

With over 250 employees still working on Starfield, the team at Bethesda is more than prepared to offer ambitious post-launch support to its latest title. It's safe to assume that players have a lot to look forward to in 2024, as Starfield is set to have a regular patch cadence of six weeks, completely independent of DLCs such as Shattered Space. The first of these updates was released on January 30, 2024, which brought significant technical fixes and graphical improvements. Though new gameplay features are coming, it would seem that Bethesda is focused more on the technical side of Starfield in its first set of patches.

Starfield Seems to Have a New Problem After the Latest Update

Starfield's February update makes modifying ships a nightmare by aggravating one of the most annoying features in the game.

Update 1.9.67 for Starfield follows this pattern, as its official patch notes reveal that Bethesda is adding support for AMD's FSR 3 (which stands for FidelityFX Super Resolution 3). The update also attempts to further tackle the FormID issue that has plagued a significant number of Starfield players, and is arguably the biggest bug that Starfield has faced since launch. While it remains to be seen if FormID issues will crop up in beta testing, Update 1.9.67 is expected to improve save game stability for players who have visited numerous locations in Starfield during their playthrough.

Given that Update 1.9.67 could be released in a week or two, there's a high likelihood that it falls outside the announced patch schedule. The reason behind this is twofold: Update 1.9.67 is smaller in scope than Update 1.9.51 for Starfield, and previous stages of beta testing on Steam have never lasted longer than 14 days. The release date for the next "big" Starfield update is assumed to be March 14, 2024. Though it's too early for concrete details on what the patch could bring to the game, Bethesda mentioned that it was working on adding new ways to travel in Starfield.

Ultimately, while technical fixes are appreciated by the community, a majority of fans are anxiously waiting for new content. Starfield already has plenty of brilliant mods, and the release of its Creation Kit will open the door for more complex projects (such as new planets, bigger cities, or even better procedural generation). However, the release of Shattered Space would likely contribute the most to bringing players back to Starfield, especially if it addresses some of the game's biggest shortcomings. The full release date for Starfield Update 1.9.67 is unknown, but players on Steam can opt in to download it early.
