Starship Troopers: Extermination is currently offering a free-to-play weekend on Steam that’s sure to appeal to both Helldivers 2 fans and anyone itching to try out the Bug-blasting FPS before buying it. Starship Troopers: Extermination initially launched in Early Access back in 2023 before seeing a full release in October 2024 and is typically available for purchase at a price point of $29.99 on Steam and $49.99 on Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
Set in the fictional world of Starship Troopers, Starship Troopers: Extermination gives players the opportunity to join the Deep Space Vanguard and “do their part” in fighting hordes of Bugs alongside other Vanguard Troopers. In addition to its familiar setting and exciting co-op multiplayer mode, there’s a single-player campaign for Extermination that fans of the films will likely appreciate as it gives Johnny Rico more lines of dialogue than the first and third movies combined.

Here's what players will need to know about creating their own sufficiently secure base in Starship Troopers: Extermination.
Starship Troopers: Extermination is Free-To-Play This Weekend
For players who’ve considered purchasing Starship Troopers: Extermination but aren’t sure if it’s something they’ll stick with, developer Offworld is hosting a “Free Weekend” for the game on Steam as part of its 10th Anniversary Sale. The free weekend will run from July 31 until August 3 at 10:00 AM PST. For those that want to continue with the game after the free weekend ends, Offworld is giving players a 50% off discount opportunity that brings the price of Starship Troopers: Extermination down from $29.99 to $14.99.
Not only will Starship Troopers: Extermination be available at a discount, but other titles from Offworld will be as well, including Squad and Beyond the Wire. The biggest draw of the free weekend for Extermination in particular, though, is its co-op multiplayer mode, which shares some similarities with the ever-popular Helldivers 2. However, one key difference between the two is that Starship Troopers: Extermination offers 16-player co-op compared to the four-player co-op available in Helldivers 2.
While thematically similar in terms of the “humans vs. Bugs” concept, Starship Troopers: Extermination differs in terms of strategy, with players tasked with retaking and building bases, constructing refineries, and completing side objectives, in addition to shooting at giant swarms of Bugs. Starship Troopers: Extermination also gives fans of the series another way to connect with it, with the game confirmed as faithful to the franchise by Johnny Rico actor Casper Van Dien.
While it was in Early Access, Starship Troopers: Extermination offered consistent updates that added new features and player feedback-driven balances changes to the game. Given all of these improvements and its “Very Positive” score of 81% on Steam, Extermination sounds like a worthwhile title to check out, especially for free like it is this weekend.
