SteamWorld Dig is free to claim on Steam right now, courtesy of its first-ever 100% discount. Steam users have until June 26 to take advantage of this three-day deal.

Developed by Gothenburg, Sweden-based Image & Form, SteamWorld Dig is the second entry in the SteamWorld anthology game series. A 2D metroidvania with a Western-Steampunk theme, it was originally released for the 3DS and PC in 2013 before making its way to PlayStation and Xbox consoles—as well as more Nintendo devices—in the years that followed.

The Steam version of SteamWorld Dig has now been treated to a temporary 100% discount, becoming free to claim on Valve's storefront. The deal went live on June 23 and is planned to run until Thursday, June 26, at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 7pm CET. Over the past 12 years, the game has been featured in dozens of Steam sales, dropping as low as $0.89. However, this is the first time ever that the Steam version of the 2013 metroidvania is entirely free to claim.

SteamWorld Dig Freebie Promotes Ongoing Franchise Sale

Image & Form has yet to acknowledge this giveaway via any of its official channels. However, looking at the publisher's recent activity, it's likely that the freebie is meant to promote its recently launched SteamWorld franchise sale on Valve's storefront. The ongoing promotion saw SteamWorld Dig 2 discounted by 94%, dropping to its lowest-ever price of $1.19. Similarly, SteamWorld Build saw its price slashed by 80%, dropping to a new low of $4.99. SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech can currently be picked up for its historical low of $2.24, whereas SteamWorld Heist is priced at $1.49 as part of the same promotion, with both of those offers amounting to 90% discounts. Much like the SteamWorld Dig giveaway, all of these offers run until June 26.

SteamWorld Dig may be nearing its 12th anniversary, but it remains widely regarded as one of the standout action platformers of recent years, particularly within the steampunk genre. This is reflected in its "Strong" rating on OpenCritic, with an average score of 82 and a 93% reviewer recommendation rate. SteamWorld Dig also boasts "Very Positive" user reviews on Steam, based on over 5,800 player impressions.

SteamWorld Dig Reaches New Steam Player Record

In recent months, SteamWorld Dig has mostly peaked at around 50 concurrent players every day, according to SteamDB data. This newly launched giveaway had a material impact on its popularity, propelling it to 1,621 concurrent Steam players on June 23. The game thus set a new concurrent PC user record more than 12 years following its last one (1,459) in June 2014.
