Summary

  • Steam helped recover a hacked account after 3 years, surprising the user.
  • Valve-owned Steam surpassed 40M concurrent users earlier this year.
  • Steam Support not only addresses hacking incidents but also sometimes offers free games as compensation.

A Steam user shared how the platform recently retrieved their long-lost account after being hacked nearly three years ago. Steam is the most prominent gaming distribution platform available on PCs, and one reason behind its success is its constant addressing of user feedback.

Although other platforms like Epic Games Store and GOG have proven to be strong competitors in recent years, Steam remains at the top. Earlier in March, Steam surpassed 40 million concurrent users, setting another major milestone for the Valve-owned platform. Many players have acknowledged that the service's popularity is due to its typically consumer-friendly choices over the years. For example, in February, Steam forbade games from including forced advertising to unlock content. The platform is also known for responding to player feedback promptly, and one user shared their particularly gratifying experience with the Steam Support team.

Reddit user Zayn1738 revealed that Steam managed to recover their account after almost three years. As the player explained, their Steam account was hacked in 2023 after they hadn't logged in for a few months, even though they had spent over $100 on it. At the time, they did contact the platform but never received a response. However, in May 2025, they tried again by commenting on a Steam forum about recovering accounts. A member of Steam Support responded, informing them that the account's password had been successfully restored, and the new login information had been sent to their email. The gaming platform has previously let fans know it doesn't take hacking lightly. Steam recently debunked reports of a data breach that allegedly compromised millions of users, and Valve assured that no accounts were at risk.

Steam Helps User Get Hacked Account Back After 3 Years

The post currently has over nine thousand upvotes, and fellow gamers agreed that Steam can be quite helpful at times. One user shared that Steam Support once found and neutralized the hacker who hijacked their account. This isn't the first time that players have shared their pleasant experiences with Valve's customer support team. Steam once gifted a player a free game of their choice after they hadn't received any updates on their malfunctioning Steam Deck. The fan then seized the opportunity to add the acclaimed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to their library free of charge.

While it's not often that Steam Support gifts free games as compensation, players can still get discounted titles thanks to the platform's periodic sales. Moreover, Steam players can sometimes claim free games for a limited time, like in the case of Mouthole, which is leaving the platform soon.
