Worms are underground enemies in SteamWorld Build. They snatch nearby workers, chew them up, and wait for new prey. Dealing with these monsters becomes inevitable when you try to explore the Marshy Ruins’ secret areas, as they block the path. But the problem is guards and traps are ineffective against Worms. They seem to be undead creatures lurking from the hellish bedrocks. This quick guide explains how to unlock the necessary machinery to kill Worms. (Yes, there are specialized items in the game to get rid of killer insects.)
SteamWorld Build: How to Get Rid of Creep
The Creep is an annoying enemy found in the Marshy Ruins. Here’s how players can get rid of the Creep in SteamWorld Build.
How to Defeat Worms
To kill Worms in SteamWorld Build, construct a Thumper. Thumpers are defensive machines that keep underground enemies away. When there is a Thumper in the area, Worms can’t attack Steambots and will hide underneath the mine.
- Thumpers have limited effective ranges. You should build them in areas exposed to Worm attacks to ensure the Steambots’ safety. (You will see the machine’s reach when moving it.)
- Thumpers must remain active. As soon as you bulldoze, deactivate, or move the building, the Worms will pop up. The only way to get rid of these monsters is by having active Thumper machines.
- Thumpers are not turrets. When grinding the “Yup.” Achievement, you don’t have to avoid Thumpers. These machines are automated protective tools that differ from basic turrets.
Building at least one Thumper is crucial for getting the Manic Mechanic Achievement.
How to Unlock Thumper
You must reach Milestone Level 11 to unlock Thumper. This requires getting at least 80 Aristobots by satisfying the needs of Engineers. After that, you can build a 3x3 Armory which allows building Thumpers.
How to Spot a Worm
You can identify a Worm’s hole by the yellowish tail sticking out of the ground. Look for a pile of dirt in the abandoned parts of the map with a glowing tentacle waving over it.
Each Worm can swallow one Steambot per minute. But their reach is limited. Basically, they can only eat workers who pass by them. If a Worm is chewing a bot, other miners can walk past it with no issue. However, as soon as the first bot is digested, the Worm will look for new victims.
Worms are the main enemy in the Marshy Ruins. It’s best to prepare for exploring this area in advance by unlocking the Thumper and Armory.
