While Stellar Blade has been a massive hit since its initial release on the PS5 in early 2024, its director isn't satisfied with the game's story. Applauded for its fast-paced combat and customization options, Stellar Blade continues to pull in thousands of players daily, with numbers currently being boosted by the game's recent release on a new platform.

Last week, Stellar Blade was released for PC, inviting an entirely new audience to experience Shift Up's renowned action-adventure romp. The PC version includes graphical upgrades and ultrawide support, along with customizable keybinds and a vast selection of fan-made mods, which the developers have encouraged players to create. In its first 24 hours on the platform, Stellar Blade pulled in over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam, eventually reaching an all-time peak of over 192,000 players on June 15. Despite reviews being incredibly positive on both PlayStation 5 and PC, the title's director isn't pleased with one major aspect of the hack-and-slash game.

In a new interview with the Korean outlet This Is Game (reported by Insider Gaming), Stellar Blade's director, Kim Hyung-tae, shared more about the game's story, stating that he finds it "poor." According to the director and Shift Up CEO, the title's cutscenes proved to be the largest challenge for developers, as while they were necessary for the game's narrative, they were also incredibly expensive. "We had to inevitably reduce cutscenes that would complement the world view or character narrative, except for the main plot, for efficiency," Hyung-tae said. This isn't the first time that Stellar Blade's story has faced criticism, and according to the director, he hopes to remedy this problem in the game's sequel, which is currently in development.

The Director of Stellar Blade Admits the Game’s Story Is Underwhelming

In May, Shift Up confirmed that a Stellar Blade sequel was in the works and is reportedly scheduled to be released as early as 2026. Additionally, the first game may be making its way to additional consoles sometime soon, with rumors pointing to Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch 2. Given the title's incredible success on PC, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Eve and her squad making the leap to more consoles soon.

In addition to Stellar Blade 2, Shift Up is also working on a new IP. Fans were given their first look at Project Spirits earlier this month, with the studio teasing some official character art and stating that it will be playable across different platforms. The game will also feature open-world exploration and will be story-based, with some RPG elements. While no release window has been officially announced, the mysterious game is expected to hit shelves sometime in 2027.
