Netflix's Stranger Things season 5 part one will be here in November, and I was excited to hear Ross Duffer say that the cold open for episode one will be "crazy." After such a long wait, I'm curious about which main characters are going to be in the opening scene, and I definitely hope that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is front and center. I'm also wondering if Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) will show up fairly early on in the season. After all, fans have been waiting to see him again since the season 4 finale dropped on Netflix in July 2022.
While I can't help but wish that we could see every Stranger Things season 5 episode at once instead of the three-part release schedule, at least fans are only a few months away from finding out how the epic tale ends. But when the show returns, I think that Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) needs a much better storyline than he has gotten so far.
Mike Wheeler Needs A Great Stranger Things Season 5 Storyline
Mike Wheeler says some funny and earnest quotes throughout all four seasons of Stranger Things, but he's not a particularly memorable character. Besides Mike's relationship with Eleven, I struggle to think of any major Mike plotlines, or any big moments that make him stand out. I think that needs to change in Stranger Things season 5. The show needs to stop focusing on this romantic relationship so much and give Mike his own mission.
Since Eleven will no doubt be the focal point of the final season, that gives Mike some space to find out who he is without her. Maybe he'll lead an investigation into Vecna and the Upside Down, or perhaps he'll team up and bond with another character. It would be fun to see Mike be inspired by Eleven's confidence and step into a leadership role.
When compared to his smart friends Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Mike isn't particularly compelling. He doesn't have a strong personality and viewers have mostly seen him bonding with Eleven or struggling with their long-distance relationship in season 4. Although Mike has lived in Hawkins his entire life and been part of his friend group for years, he isn't quirky like Dustin or compassionate and kind like Will.
While I want Eleven to survive her battle with Vecna, I also hope that Mike becomes more interesting and more mature. Instead of dealing with his problems or his emotions, he often becomes frustrated or irritated, and since Stranger Things is a coming-of-age story, I think it's time for him to grow up.
Should Mike And Eleven Stay Together In Stranger Things Season 5?
Of course, it's hard to talk about Mike Wheeler's presence in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things without wondering about the fate of Mike and Eleven's relationship. On the one hand, I can't imagine these two characters not ending up together. On the other hand, I think it would be more intriguing if they broke up, but if the show hinted at hope for the future.
Since I don't think that Mike's storyline should be tied to Eleven's forever, I'm okay with the couple spending some time apart. It would be more interesting if Stranger Things season 5 focused on Will Byers and Mike's friendship rather than Mike and Eleven's relationship. Will and Mike have been close for years, and they need to repair their bond. Whatever happens to Mike next, he needs to stand on his own, and I'm hopeful that he'll have some character growth and development.
