This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1
Stranger Things Season 5 is finally here, and Volume 1 was everything that we expected. We finally got to see our favorite characters going against the extremely powerful army of Vecna, or Henry Creel. Of course, Vecna didn't stay for very long in the first volume, but he created a lot of trouble for everyone in Hawkins anyway. He was the one pulling all the strings from the shadows, and in the fourth episode, he finally revealed himself.
Apart from terrifying us with the more sinister form of Vecna, Volume 1 of Stranger Things Season 5 has answered a lot of burning questions for us, especially towards the very end. Of course, it all happens all too fast, so if you're confused about the ending of the first volume, we've got you covered.
Vecna Is Actually A Boring Villain, And Stranger Things Season 5 Could Just Finally Confirm That
Vecna is a powerful villain whose backstory is explored in the fourth season of the hit Netflix show, but what's going to happen to him in season 5?
Stranger Things Season 5 Brings Back Eight, Or Kali Prasad
The Military Was Holding Kali Captive At Their Upside Down Base
That's right, Kali Prasad, also known as Eight, has finally returned in Season 5 of Stranger Things. For those who don't remember, Kali Prasad was a test subject at Hawkins Lab, along with Eleven. However, she escaped the lab, and Eleven had only faded memories of her sister. In Season 2, however, Eleven tracks down Kali and spends some time with her. Unlike Eleven at the time, Kali had full control over her powers. So, yes, it was Kali who gave Eleven the first important lesson about psychic powers.
In Season 5, the Hawkins gang learns about a military base in the Upside Down, led by the new antagonist, Dr. Kay, portrayed by Linda Hamilton. It was for sure that the military was hiding someone in the lab, and Eleven thought that it was Vecna, since she couldn't sense this captive's presence using her abilities. However, it turns out this captive was Eight, which is sort of good news for Eleven and everyone else. Of course, we've yet to see how Dr. Kay captured Kali, but it's clear that she was experimenting on the girl to study her powers. Now, it remains to be seen what role Kali will play in the rest of the season.
Yes, Max Isn't Dead In Stranger Things Season 5, Yet
She Is Trapped Inside Vecna's Memories
In the fourth season, Vecna opened four gates to the Upside Down by killing four people, the last one being Max. Despite all the efforts from the gang, Vecna was able to kill Max, but she was only dead for a couple of minutes. That's because Eleven used her powers to bring her friend back to life. But the trauma sent Max into a Coma, and in the fifth season, we learn that she is somehow trapped inside Vecna's memories, which, as Max herself states, exist in a world of 1000 memories. Coincidentally, Henry has brought Holly to the same world, and Max is able to find her.
Max tells Holly everything about Henry and how she traveled from one memory to another until she is found by Vecna. Basically, it was fine for the first few memories, but Max eventually messes up by going to the exact memory where she was killed by Vecna. Since it was Vecna's memory as well, it got her within his reach. But before Vecna could capture Max, she ran towards a cave, which, for some reason, scares Henry to his bones. The exact reason for Vecna's fear hasn't been revealed, but since it's his memory, it might be something related to his childhood. Maybe the place is tied to a certain moment from his past that still haunts him.
Anyway, Max reveals that right before Vecna found her, she was this close to getting back to the real world. Lucas was right in front of her, playing Running Up The Hill. But sadly, the song ends at the exact moment when Max was about to escape, thus closing the gate for her. That's right, she could've escaped if the song were a few more seconds longer.
Will Awakens His Powers In The Final Season Of Stranger Things
Yes, He Isn't A Weak Scared Kid Anymore
Will Byers was the very first victim of Vecna in the Upside Down, or that's what we know. Of course, he returns to the real world, but it was clear from the very beginning that he was still tied to purgatory. In fact, Vecna used him as a spy in the second season. After that, Will was somehow always able to sense Vecna's presence. Well, the "how" question is finally answered in the fifth season. Apparently, when Will was in the Upside Down in Season 1, Vecna found him and made him a part of the Hive Mind. That's how Vecna was able to see through Will's eyes and find out what's actually happening in the real world.
However, the tables are turned in the fifth season, as this time, Will is able to see through every Demogorgon's eyes. He can see exactly when and where the monsters are going to attack, but he's simply an observer at first. Mike tells Will that if he's actually a part of the Hive Mind, and he can see through the monsters' eyes, then maybe he can also take control of these monsters as well. Of course, Will isn't Vecna, but that's basically how Henry controls these monsters as well. So, by the end of the episode, Will throws in the UNO Reverse card by using the Hive Mind to access some of Vecna's powers. Instead of a puppet, Will decides to become the puppeteer to save the people he loves.
Of course, some fans might think that Will has psychic powers like Eleven, but that's clearly not the case. In simpler terms, Will has used the Hive Mind, which has always worked against him, to tap into Vecna's psychic powers. That's why when he kills all those monsters, he looks more like Vecna and nothing like Eleven. Honestly, this is an extremely exciting character development for Will. Ever since the start, we've seen him acting scared, so it's exciting to see the more fierce side of the boy.
