Summary

  • The June 5 Street Fighter 6 update will include a new track by the legendary composer Yoko Shimomura.
  • Elena will be added to the Street Fighter 6 roster in the new update.
  • Several balance adjustments will also ensure that no fighters are too overpowered.

The latest Street Fighter 6 update will contain a special treat for longtime fans in the form of a new track from legendary Street Fighter 2 composer Yoko Shimomura. Capcom has been adding new characters to the Street Fighter 6 roster since 2023, introducing a mix of classic fighters and newcomers through periodic DLC releases. So far, Street Fighter 6 has seen the new villain A.K.I., Street Fighter 5 protagonist Rashid, Street Fighter 4 pugilist Ed, the infamous antagonists Akuma and M. Bison, and Fatal Fury’s Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui join its ranks.

The next Street Fighter 6 DLC character will be the returning combatant Elena, who has been kicking down opponents with her powerful Capoeira fighting style since Street Fighter 3 way back in 1997. Elena will join the Street Fighter 6 roster on June 5, marking her first appearance in a mainline Street Fighter game since 2014’s Ultra Street Fighter 4. This alone is exciting for longtime Street Fighter fans, but it turns out that Capcom has another nostalgic surprise for the next big Street Fighter 6 update.

Street Fighter 6 on Switch 2 Comes With a Big Catch

Gamers who purchase Street Fighter 6 on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 should be prepared, as the title comes with a huge catch.

As confirmed on the official Street Fighter Twitter account, the June 6 Street Fighter 6 update will also add a new background music track composed by Yoko Shimomura, the renowned composer behind the original Street Fighter 2 soundtrack. This track is “Edge of Triumph,” a rousing rock anthem that sounds very much like the classic Street Fighter 2 songs that Shimomura helped create back in the early 90s.

Many fans still regard Street Fighter 2 as not only one of the greatest games in the series, but in the fighting genre as a whole. Part of this comes from the game’s iconic soundtrack, which had a memorable theme for each of the original 12 Street Fighter 2 characters. Ken and Guile’s themes in particular are especially popular, with the latter even becoming the source of a humorous meme in which fans add Guile’s music to pretty much anything.

Outside of Street Fighter, Yoko Shimomura has worked on other classic franchises like Kingdom Hearts, the Mario & Luigi series, and Super Mario RPG. She eventually returned to Street Fighter to compose a new version of Dhalsim’s Street Fighter 2 theme back in 2003, but “Edge of Triumph” will be her first completely original track for the series in nearly 34 years. Players will be able to listen to her new work in the Character BGM Settings option when Street Fighter 6’s next update launches on June 5.
