  • The sequel to the 2018 game will include a 4-player online co-op mode.
  • Subnautica 2 will be available on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows Store.

During the October 17 Xbox Partner Preview event, Krafton and Unknown Worlds Entertainment shared the first teaser trailer for Subnautica 2 and confirmed it would enter early access in 2025. As the sequel to 2018's Subnautica, the upcoming Subnautica 2 will take place on a new planet and include a 4-player co-op mode for players to enjoy.

Drawing inspiration from other open-world titles like Minecraft, the first Subnautica game allowed players to explore the aquatic planet 4546B, uncover the secrets of the advanced alien species called the Architects, and encounter various Leviathans that sometimes attack without warning. Subnautica later had a spin-off, Subnautica: Below Zero, released in early access in 2019. While Below Zero was initially planned to be an expansion for Subnautica, it became a standalone title set two years after the original game. Both Subnautica and Below Zero were lauded for their underwater exploration mechanics and for encouraging players to comb through the depths of the ocean.

After months of teases by the Subnautica development team on social media, Unknown Worlds and Krafton gave fans their first look at the game's sequel. At the October 17 Xbox Partner Preview broadcast, Subnautica 2 was shown in a trailer that lasted just over one minute. The trailer showed the player character, whose name remains unknown, falling to the depths of the ocean. Set on a different planet from previous games, Subnautica 2 will add an online multiplayer co-op mode supporting up to four players. New tools, bases, submersibles, and lifeforms will be part of Subnautica 2, which will enter early access in 2025 on Xbox Series X/S consoles, as well as PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows Store.

Subnautica 2 Enters Early Access in 2025

Users can wishlist Subnautica 2 on each storefront to be alerted when the early access period begins in 2025. While a precise date for Subnautica 2's early access program was not revealed, Subnautica 2 confirmed that Xbox Game Pass customers will be able to play for no additional cost. Unknown Worlds and Krafton stated that Subnautica 2 early access players may encounter bugs as development continues, but the dev team encouraged users to shape the future of Subnautica 2 with player feedback during the game's early access period.

As one of a growing number of titles powered by Unreal Engine 5, the environments and lifeforms of Subnautica 2 will likely be much more detailed than those seen in its predecessors. Only time will tell what unique gameplay the title will bring when Subnautica 2 begins early access.

You have crash-landed on an alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.

After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft knives, lights, diving gear, and personal water craft. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.

Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.
