- Former boss David Haddad's decisions greatly affected Wonder Woman's development.
- Warner Bros. Faced major financial losses, leading to Haddad's resignation and Wonder Woman's cancelation.
The cancelation of the Wonder Woman game was partly caused by the underperformance of fellow DC title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, according to an industry insider. Wonder Woman developer Monolith was also shut down by WB Games, along with two other studios.
The Wonder Woman game project was first announced at The Game Awards in 2021, with a short teaser trailer that excited many players. However, after years of little to no updates on the title, Warner Bros. Canceled the Wonder Woman game altogether. Warner Bros. Games also shut down Wonder Woman's developer studio Monolith Productions, known for classic titles like Shadow of Mordor, No One Lives Forever, and FEAR. The news disappointed DC fans who were looking forward to an AAA title centered on the iconic Amazonian. Now, a reliable source has shed some light on the reasoning behind the decision.
Canceled Wonder Woman Game Praised by Comic Book Writer
A comic book veteran attached to the canceled Wonder Woman game reveals fresh information about Monolith’s ill-fated project.
In a recent Kinda Funny Games podcast episode (via GamesRadar), veteran Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier talked about the issues that led to Wonder Woman' s cancelation. According to Schreier, some decisions taken by WB Games' former boss David Haddad greatly affected Wonder Woman's development. Haddad had shut down Monolith's new IP, which prompted several of Monolith's directors to resign. In consequence, the studio had to focus on rebuilding its team and Wonder Woman at the same time. Moreover, Wonder Woman was set to explore Shadow of Mordor's clever Nemesis system, but the studio rebooted it to fit a more linear action style similar to God of War. "But by then, it was kind of too late," said Schreier. "Especially because last year was so bad for the Warner Brothers Games organization."
"Last year, Suicide Squad was a humungous flop - they wrote off $200 million because of that. MultiVersus and Quidditch Champions, also both flops, [they] wrote off another $100 million because of that," explained Schreier. This series of losses led to Haddad resigning as head and the eventual cancelation of Wonder Woman. JB Perrette took over the game division and plans on bringing profits by pushing the company's biggest brands, like the potential Hogwarts Legacy sequel or the upcoming Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.
Wonder Woman Cancelation Was In Part Caused by Suicide Squad's Failure
This isn't the first time that Suicide Squad: Kills the Justice League's poor performance has hit a major blow at video game studios, as its developer Rocksteady reportedly suffered layoffs in January. Suicide Squad recently released one last major update before support for the live-service title ended.
Aside from Wonder Woman, WB Games closed the doors on another popular title earlier this year. Despite having a more positive audience than Suicide Squad, MultiVersus was confirmed to shut down on May 30, 2025, with Warner Bros. Also closing its studio Player First Games.
