As Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League comes to an end, all eyes are on what DC will deliver next with its titular heroes. As of now, it seems like that will come in the form of Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman title. Even though nothing is known about this game outside a quick reveal trailer, it has the potential to be something truly special. And thanks to Suicide Squad's controversial narrative, Wonder Woman has the chance to make its own mark on the DC universe.

For years, DC's biggest franchise in the video game space has been Rocksteady's Arkhamverse. Much like with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some fans believed that Warner Bros. Had plans to build its own universe off of that with the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Wonder Woman. However, it seems like that is not actually the case, and instead, Wonder Woman will be free to tell its own story after Suicide Squad. While it remains to be seen if that succeeds, that may be its best choice.

Wonder Woman's Fate Could Help Monolith Forge Its Own Path

Wonder Woman Does Not Need to be Tied Down by the Arkhamverse

At the end of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, it is revealed that the Justice League members who players killed were just clones of the heroes. However, Wonder Woman was never taken by Brainiac and instead was killed by Superman's clone. So, until Rocksteady says otherwise, it seems like she is officially dead within the Arkhamverse. That means that players probably shouldn't hold their breath for an Arkhamverse Wonder Woman story, but luckily, fans of the character are going to be treated to something brand-new.

Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman project can now build its own unique version of the DC universe. The studio does not have to ensure it adheres to Rocksteady's canon, it has the freedom to explore its own version of said characters, and it can kick off its very own franchise alongside the Arkhamverse. As long as the studio is able to nail down the look and feel of the character, fans could be in for an exciting treat once the game finally rolls around.

Players Will Not Need to Wonder if it was Ever Canon to the Arkhamverse

Not only has Suicide Squad given Monolith a clean slate to tell its own story, but it also means that Wonder Woman will not go through the same thing that Gotham Knights did. When Gotham Knights was announced, some fans debated whether it was canon to the Arkhamverse or not. The concept seemingly picked up after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight and the game was being developed by the same studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins. Plus, it followed many of the same characters and had a very similar aesthetic to those games. However, WB Games Montreal later clarified that Gotham Knights wasn't part of the Arkhamverse, even if some fans wished it was.

With Wonder Woman, there will be no question whether it is canon to the Arkhamverse, as that version of Wonder Woman is officially dead. Unless the studio sets the game way in the past, players will know exactly what they are getting here, so the studio can start building out its own lore from the second the game is announced. And if it hits all the right notes, then players that were pushed away by Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may have the perfect reason to come back.

As of now, there is virtually nothing known about the Wonder Woman project, but based on Monolith Productions' past success with the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor series, there is a strong chance that a gripping action-adventure title lies ahead. If its version of the DC universe is as stellar as the Arkhamverse was, then Suicide Squad: KTJL can truly be put to rest.
