Konami first announced Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars in 2022. The remaster would keep the sprites of monsters and characters in 2D, while all the environments, backgrounds, and special effects would receive a high-resolution upgrade. Initially, the collection had a 2023 release date, but Konami postponed the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD release date.

Other enhancements were also announced for the games. All characters will have new portraits, redesigned by Junko Kawano, the same artist who initially drew them in 1995. Both Suikoden will include a significant number of environmental sounds not present in the original versions, such as the sound of running water, wind, insects, and footsteps, with battle sounds now in HD as well. Lastly, the games will feature an updated interface and a dialogue log, an essential addition considering that Suikoden games are incredibly lengthy RPGs.
When the Suikoden Remaster Collection was announced, fans were astonished, as they believed Konami had forgotten the series. However, many speculate that the publisher decided to revive Suikoden after the success of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes on Kickstarter, a game considered the series' spiritual successor since it was created by Yoshitaka Murayama, Suikoden's original creator.
After the successful crowdfunding of Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, Murayama was asked if he would return to Konami to produce a new Suikoden title, and at the time, he expressed his willingness. Unfortunately, Yoshitaka Murayama passed away shortly before Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes was released, meaning he neither saw the success of his indie creation nor will be able to return to lead Suikoden if the remastered collection proves successful.
