Illumination's Super Mario Bros. Film (the title of which is thus far unrevealed) is set to release a first look at New York Comic Con. The convention announced that the first teaser trailer for the Chris Pratt film will debut during the celebration.The Super Mario Bros. Film has been long-awaited, as the last adaptation to make it to the big screens was 1993's Super Mario Bros., an off-beat, live-action take on the source material that starred the late Bob Hoskins as Mario Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi Mario. Though it persists today as a cult-classic, the original film was not well-received, and its departures from the video games were stark. This new adaptation has fans hoping for a more faithful take, especially since it's animated, though the decision not to cast Charles Martinet in the title role has attracted some controversy. New York Comic Con recently tweeted out that a teaser trailer for the Super Mario Bros. Film would be played during the course of the convention. A poster attached to the tweet further confirms that the film's trailer will be out on October 6 at 4 PM. The account did not specify whether the trailer would be released simultaneously online. The film has attracted a lot of attention, being a high profile property. Pratt's controversial casting as Mario as Mario, in particular, has drawn the ire of many who feel that the film has already fallen prey to 'celebrity stunt casting' rather than hiring trained voice acting professionals for the roles. Additionally, Pratt's somewhat-controversial persona has received much public attention in recent years, and many memes have sprung forth concerning the film.
Though Pratt has suggested his Mario voice will be unlike anything audiences have ever heard, some remain reluctant about the film. Illumination's reputation as the company behind Despicable Me and, perhaps more notoriously, Minions, has caused some to question whether the film will be similar in humorous tone to those films. While the Super Mario franchise has not been afraid to be humorous in the past, its sense of humor has been markedly different from that present in Illumination's brand, which many find to be juvenile.
Still, some aspects of the film have fans excited. Charlie Day's casting as Luigi and Jack Black's casting as Bowser have received a positive reception. The two are notably internet favorites, and Day's casting has fans excited about a neurotic take on Luigi.
The untitled Super Mario Bros. Film releases in theatets on April 7, 2023.
