A Nintendo insider revealed that Super Mario Bros. Wonder will give players more of a challenge than they might expect. It's just one of the multiple longtime series conventions that this game is set to break.

After rumors of being in development, Super Mario Bros. Wonder was officially announced in a June 2023 Nintendo Direct. It has been deemed by many to be a breath of fresh air for 2D Mario after Nintendo dropped a whopping five New Super Mario Bros. Outings between 2006 and 2013. Sporting a newer, more alive art style, more playable characters, brand-new enemies and level tropes, and some wacky new power-ups and gimmicks, it should be a treat to see everything it has to offer once it finally drops this Fall.

This information was revealed by an insider named Zippo, who has made both correct and incorrect Nintendo predictions in the past. According to them, players of Super Mario Bros. Wonder are "in for a rude awakening" if they're expecting another easy 2D romp, as Nintendo has chosen to up the difficulty while still making sure the game is accessible enough to players of all stripes. As a result of these changes, the game has been "absolutely decimating testers." Zippo compared the difficulty to that of Super Mario Bros. 3, which Nintendo internally cited as its biggest source of influence. Proof of this can be found just by looking at the gameplay physics shown in the announcement trailer.

Zippo also took the time to reveal some other details they managed to pick up on, such as the story also taking a page from Super Mario Bros. 3. Apparently, Mario and co. Must liberate the rulers of neighboring kingdoms, namely the Flower Kingdom, where Bowser is launching his next attack for a currently unknown reason. Another similarity to Mario Bros. 3 is the sheer number of power-ups planned to be in the game. In addition to the power-ups confirmed for Super Mario Bros. Wonder thus far, several returning ones are also present, including Mini Mario, Ice Mario (the variant from New Super Mario Bros. Wii), and Tanooki Mario.

Of course, all of the above should be taken with all the salt in the world, but it doesn't stop Super Mario Bros. Wonder from deserving every ounce of hype it gets. It's the first 2D Mario in a decade, it's innovating upon countless aspects of the gameplay, and it even marks the first time in six years when a Mario release gets to directly compete with a Sonic release. Fans should be delighted by these revelations, and with Zippo promising more insight to come, there is certainly a lot to look forward to up until launch day.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch on October 20.
