The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has been confirmed to be in production, and it will be hitting theaters next spring. The announcement of the follow-up to 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie served as the kick-off to the September 2025 Nintendo Direct live stream presentation, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and co-producer Chris Meladandri of Illumination have hinted that a lot of good things are in store.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success, having grossed more than $1.36 billion at the worldwide box office, with nearly $575 million of that amount coming from domestic ticket sales. It was also the highest-grossing animated film of 2023 and the second-highest-grossing overall, behind Barbie, becoming the first animated film in history to cross the billion-dollar box office benchmark.

Rumors of a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie have been around since the original animated film's debut, and those flames have been stoked even by cast members like Jack Black. With the sequel now officially confirmed via the Nintendo Direct presentation, fans can look forward to familiar characters from the Mario franchise once again gracing movie screens in April 2026. The new teaser trailer is brief and doesn't reveal much, showing Mario resting under a tree before panning over the landscape, passing creatures like Monty Moles and Cheep-Cheeps, before rising over Peach's castle to reveal the title against a galactic backdrop.

Much of the praise for the 2023 animated film went to The Super Mario Bros. Movie's cast, despite a lot of pre-release trepidation over how Chris Pratt would perform as Mario. Meladandri has confirmed that Pratt will be returning to the lead role, and many other familiar voices will be reprising their characters for the second go-around as well. This includes Black as Bowser, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Bowser's status at the end of the first movie left his fate for the future unknown, but considering Black's popularity in filling the role, it's likely he'll once again play a major part in the story.

While the Super Mario Galaxy games will provide the basis for the game's plot, Melandani promises that it will appeal to fans of games from across the franchise's four-decade history, with "surprises for fans of every Mario era." Miyamoto, who serves alongside Meladandri as co-producer, called the sequel worthy of serving as the centerpiece of the 40th anniversary of the Mario franchise, which takes place on September 13.
