A group of Super Mario Maker players are attempting to beat every level ever created by other users before the Wii U's online services shut down for good. With the Nintendo Switch currently being the Japanese game giant's focus, Nintendo has been phasing out the services of its previous consoles, the Wii U and 3DS. While fans knew that these were being shut down, Nintendo finally confirmed the exact date the Wii U and 3DS servers will go offline. This closure will affect all games released on these systems that have online play and communication, such as the first Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, and Super Mario Maker.

The first Super Mario Maker game was a Wii U exclusive that allowed players to create their own levels, using obstacles and enemies from a variety of games, like the original Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Super Mario World. Players could then share these levels online for other people to play, theoretically allowing for an endless number of levels to play. With the Wii U's online services about to be taken offline, a group of Mario Maker players have announced their intention to try and beat every single level ever uploaded to the game.

This group is known as Team 0%, consisting of eight fans who are hardened Super Mario players. Their ambitious overall goal is to beat every level in Super Mario Maker 1 and 2. While their goal started back in October, now that Nintendo confirmed the exact day that the Wii U's services are shutting down, a deadline has been set for Team 0%. Since the first Super Mario Maker shuttered its level upload feature in 2020, the team have an exact total of levels they have yet to complete, with there being over 3000 levels to beat.

Progress of the team's efforts is cataloged both on the team's official Discord server and Twitter account, with the latter providing daily updates and essentially a countdown. As of January 26, 2024, there are 3324 remaining levels to beat in Super Mario Maker, with the team's projected completion date of this goal being February 23, 2024. With the Wii U and 3DS planning to sunset on April 8, 2024, this leaves less than 75 days left for the team to achieve this.

Current Progress from Team 0% (as of January 26, 2024):

  • Super Mario Maker Levels remaining: 3,324
  • Days remaining: 74
  • Projected completion date: February 23rd 2024

A lot of fun from Super Mario Maker and its sequel comes from the player being able to create their own levels and share them with other players. While players can no longer upload their creations on the Wii U iteration, they can still download their favorite levels and play them offline even after the shutdown. Players are hoping Team 0% are able to clear their goal in time before Nintendo shuts down the Wii U's online services.
