Superhero games were once all the rage back in the '80s and '90s. There were a lot of Batman and Spider-Man games released on systems like the NES and SNES. While some of those games still look great today thanks to their high-quality pixel art, they’re not what everyone wants to see.
A lot of players care about cutting-edge graphics, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting the best of the best. While some of these games are almost a decade old now, they still hold up visually. For anyone who wants a visually stunning superhero game that is easily playable on current hardware, these are the games to get.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Anyone Can Wear The Mask
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Released
- October 20, 2023
- ESRB
- T For Teen Due To Blood, Drug Reference, Mild Language, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Open-World, Action-Adventure, Superhero
Every Spider-Man game from Insomniac looks great, with characters new and old, sporting great new designs. While the white webbing on Peter’s suit wasn’t a complete reinvention, it was a nice modern touch that transferred well into the latest game, M arvel's Spider-Man 2.
Peter and Miles share a compelling story that wouldn’t be half as good if the character models and mo-cap acting weren’t up to snuff. The fluidity of combat and swinging through New York also looks fantastic, and this current trilogy is among the best of the best for superhero games.
InFamous: Second Son
A Forgotten Sony Superhero
inFAMOUS Second Son
- Released
- March 21, 2014
inFamous: Second Son launched around the same time as the launch of the PS4, and it still looks good over a decade later. It has a similar feel to the X-Men universe, as a secret government organization is rounding up mutated individuals who it has deemed dangerous.
Delsin is a street punk who gains the ability to steal powers from others, like abilities based on light and smoke. Second Son was one of the best games that showcased the PS4’s particle effects during combat, and time has only helped it look great with one of the best versions of Seattle ever realized in games.
Marvel's Avengers
Assemble Online
Marvel's Avengers
- Released
- September 4, 2020
Marvel's Avengers was an attempt to make a live-service game like Destiny 2 set in the Marvel universe. While the roadmap wasn’t as well-realized with post-game content, the core game, however brief, at least delivered a good story campaign. Youngster Kamala Khan tries to help The Avengers reassemble after a catastrophic event rips them apart and shatters the public's trust in superheroes.
Classic Superhero Games That Deserve a HD Remake/Remaster
Video games based on comic books have been around for years, and there are some older titles that deserve to be brought back into the spotlight.
Marvel's Avengers is another game with a great story that is well-acted and sports well-designed character models. The action is well animated for each playable character, too, from Kamala’s stretchy arms to Iron Man’s laser blasts.
Gotham Knights
The Bat Family Comes Together
Gotham Knights
- Released
- October 21, 2022
- ESRB
- T For Teen // Blood, Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Action RPG
Gotham Knights is not directly tied to the Arkham games, but it still follows Batman’s crusade to save Gotham. Unfortunately, Batman goes away after the opening, and it’s up to his surrogate “Bat” children to pick up the torch.
As Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, or Red Hood, players can patrol Gotham alone or with friends online in co-op. The story isn’t as dynamic as other Batman games or many Marvel games, but the neon lights hitting the cold, dark streets of Gotham do look good while exploring, and the action isn’t bad either.
Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy
James Gunn Would Be Proud
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
- Released
- October 26, 2021
- ESRB
- T For Teen Due To Language, Mild Blood, Mild Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Action-Adventure
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy did not get the attention it so rightfully deserved when it was released in 2021. It lacks the open-world city of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, and it isn't the MCU version of the familiar heroes that many fans are accustomed to, but this spin on the Guardians of the Galaxy is a lot of fun.
The tone follows similar motifs from the MCU films, but the gameplay was more like Mass Effect. Players can only control Star-Lord, but they can issue orders to other characters during combat. Among all of these superhero games, this is the one that looks the most unique thanks to its foreign planets, diverse alien races, and wild sci-fi effects.
Marvel's Midnight Suns
Pretty Stellar For A Card Game
Marvel's Midnight Suns
- Released
- December 2, 2022
- ESRB
- T For Teen Due To Language, Mild Blood, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Tactical, RPG
Marvel's Midnight Suns is a tactical card game where heroes move and take combat actions drawn from a core deck. The character animations in cutscenes and combat aren’t as polished as some other superhero games, but it’s still genuinely great-looking for what it accomplishes.
Most Fun Marvel Games, Ranked
Marvel games vary in genre, but these titles are an absolute blast to play.
The plot revolves around players getting a small group of heroes together to stop an impending darkness from brainwashing the minds of heroes and villains alike. With narrative-based character choices and tons of ways to upgrade the roster of Marvel heroes' combat potential, this strategy game makes for a compelling purchase.
Injustice 2
Non-Mortals Kombat
Injustice 2
- Released
- May 11, 2017
- ESRB
- T for Teen: Alcohol Reference, Blood, Language, Suggestive Themes, Violence
- Genre(s)
- Fighting
Injustice 2 is a fighting game from the Mortal Kombat team, NetherRealm Studios, which continues where the first game left off. The original’s premise saw Superman and other Metahumans ascending to power after deeming humanity worthless and fit to be ruled. Batman assembled a team to stop them, and in this sequel, Batman must free Superman and other Metahumans to face a greater threat.
For a fighting game, the story is compelling, even if all of the DC characters aren’t as familiar as the Marvel ones. NetherRealm Studios might not make the most well-lit games, but their character models and the attention to detail in their injuries help Injustice 2 stand out.
Saints Row 4
Evolve Your Hero
Saints Row 4
- Released
- August 20, 2013
- ESRB
- M for Mature: Blood, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs
- Genre(s)
- Third-Person Shooter, Open-World
Saints Row 4 is not based on a Marvel or DC property. Instead, it ups the ante from the previous Saints Row game. As the President of the United States, players gain superpowers following an alien invasion, and they must use them to push back the invaders at any cost.
Players can customize how they want their powers to grow, from super speed to creating blast waves. It may be old, but the goofy over-the-top story and action of Saints Row 4 will make a lot of players look past the unrealistic graphics and see the more artistic side of the developer’s decisions.
