The DreadOut series is making a comeback on the PS5 and Nintendo Switch with a remastered collection. The DreadOut games come from Indonesian indie developer Digital Happiness. These horror games all focus on Linda, a high-schooler trapped in different haunted areas, forced to explore locations and battle ghosts using her phone and her camera. Releasing a decade ago to mixed reception, DreadOut seems somewhat forgotten by gamers, outside of the celebration of the series' 10th anniversary on Steam.
Gamers may recognize DreadOut to be particularly reminiscent of the cult-classic Fatal Frame series. In both franchises, players hunt ghosts using special cameras . Players who loved Fatal Frame's unique spin on the survival-horror genre may find even more to enjoy in DreadOut's take on the idea.
The DreadOut Remastered Collection has been announced for PS5 and Nintendo Switch, with digital and physical editions coming soon. This collection includes the original 2014 release of DreadOut along with its 2016 follow up, DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark. Despite the praise DreadOut has received from dedicated fans, the games haven't had much of a chance to shine since their official release. These remasters will give DreadOut an opportunity to find an even bigger audience while providing fans with improved versions of the games to return to. DreadOut 2 was considered one of the best horror games on the Nintendo Switch, and the new collection will give those who enjoyed that release even more to play through.
DreadOut Remastered Collection Trailer
Fans of the initial DreadOut releases are excited to see the series make a comeback. Fans of the series note that the DreadOut series is evocative of the best PS2 horror games, and are excited to see more of it in any capacity. Some players have noted that the older releases of DreadOut and DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark are buggy and in need of some overall polish, so a remaster may be exactly what plenty of gamers have wanted.
DreadOut players are not only excited that the game may get more of a spotlight with its rerelease, but about the influences the game draws upon and the vibes the series brings with it. DreadOut draws on Asian folklore for its scares, and gamers who give the series a shot when the remastered collection releases may be able to enjoy something a little different from the horror they're used to.
