Storm Lancers is a brand-new local co-op game from ProbablyMonsters, a studio headed by former Bungie CEO Harold Ryan, and it's being released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch has its fair share of local co-op games, with some absolutely incredible co-op games readily available to play on the system.
While the Switch has online multiplayer functionality, it's safe to say that its main focus is on local play. From Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, many of the Nintendo Switch's biggest multiplayer games feature local support. And soon, Nintendo Switch fans will have yet another local co-op game to try - one that looks incredibly promising.
Storm Lancers is a Co-Op Game Coming Exclusively to the Switch
ProbablyMonsters has announced Storm Lancers, a Switch-exclusive game releasing this fall. Storm Lancers is a side-scrolling action roguelike game where players take on the role of two people who have crash-landed on a deadly alien planet. Designed with local couch co-op in mind, Storm Lancers features a stylish cel-shaded art style inspired by 1980s Saturday morning cartoons, fast-paced gameplay, and, in typical roguelike fashion, the ability to purchase permanent upgrades to make subsequent runs a little easier. While there are those that have criticized the sheer number of roguelikes flooding the market, Storm Lancers definitely stands out from the pack, and its focus on local co-op combined with its Switch exclusivity makes it especially intriguing.
Even though Storm Lancers is being built exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, the game will also be playable on the Switch 2. The Nintendo Switch 2 is backward compatible with the majority of Switch 1 games, and barring some unforeseen technical issues or something along those lines, Storm Lancers will be among them. This means that this fall, both Switch 1 and Switch 2 gamers will have a new co-op game to play.
Of course, with the Switch 2 being backward compatible, it has access to all the Switch 1 local co-op games. There are also local co-op games that are playable only on the Nintendo Switch 2 and not the Switch 1, like the critically-acclaimed Split Fiction, Mario Kart World, and more. Donkey Kong Bananza even has a local co-op mode, proving that Nintendo is all-in on the feature when it comes to the Switch 2. Hopefully Storm Lancers will be another solid addition to the line-up of co-op games playable on the Switch family of consoles when it launches this fall.
