System Shock 2's critically acclaimed remaster is set to launch on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch consoles on July 10. Officially titled System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, the enhanced edition has already earned a "Very Positive" rating on Steam. Initially, the game was scheduled to launch simultaneously on all platforms on June 26. However, the developer had to delay the console release due to technical issues.

The team behind the new System Shock remaster is Nightdive Studios, known for its work on the enhanced editions of Doom and Doom 2. Of course, the studio has many other admired remasters under its belt, including the 2023 remaster of Quake 2.

Nightdive Wants to Remaster PS3 and Xbox 360 Games

Nightdive Studios seems to be taking requests for new remasters as it asks fans which Xbox 360 and PS3-era games they'd like to see next.

Celebrating the game's success on Steam, Nightdive Studios has confirmed that, on July 10, the System Shock 2 remaster is coming to Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While pricing hasn't been revealed, it's likely to match the Steam version at $30. This launch should be especially exciting for System Shock fans, as the remaster introduces cross-play multiplayer, a feature absent from the original 1999 release.

System Shock 2 Remaster Set to Release on Consoles

  • Release Date: July 10
  • Release Time: 8:00 AM EDT (5:00 AM PDT)
  • Price: $30 (Speculated)

According to the PlayStation Store listing, the remaster is set to launch at 8:00 AM EDT on Thursday, July 10. However, players in the US may be able to access it as early as 5:00 AM PDT on July 9. More importantly, the console release will include all the available patches, making it the most polished edition so far. Wishlist pages for System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster are already live on PlayStation and Xbox, though Nintendo Switch owners may have to wait a bit longer for the product page to appear.

The System Shock 2 remaster was originally introduced as the Enhanced Edition before being renamed to the 25th Anniversary Remaster. This was clearly done as a tribute to the original game's 25th anniversary, coinciding with the release of the new edition. Interestingly, the original 1999 title is often regarded as a classic horror game that didn't sell well at launch. This remaster could, therefore, serve as a redemption arc, finally giving the game the broader recognition it deserves.

For those unfamiliar, System Shock 2 features horror-driven gameplay, which remains intact in the remaster. Players must fend off hordes of mutants and robotic enemies while navigating the claustrophobic corridors of the FTL ship Von Braun. With the addition of co-op support, up to four players can now experience the same campaign together. Even better, the remaster includes mod support, opening the door to creative—and potentially hilarious—user-made additions in the near future. It's worth noting, however, that the upcoming mods will likely be limited to the PC version, as console editions typically don't support modding features.
