Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon has a lot of hidden secrets and encounters, and players who aren't thorough with their exploration can easily miss some good gear and other items. This is the case with the asylum in the prologue — there are two optional mini-bosses here that drop useful starting equipment, but they're pretty easy to miss.

If you want the best possible start in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, then you'll want to scour the entire asylum for things that you can take with you. Here's where you can find these two bosses as well as the gear they drop when you beat them.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon - Secret Asylum Boss Locations

Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon Prologue Guard's key

There are two mini-bosses in the asylum, but before you waltz into their respective cells, you'll first need the Guard's Key, which is on the body of a dead guard to the right of your jail cell. Once Caradoc frees you, turn right, then head down the hall. Nab the keys from the corpse, make sure to grab the Lockpicks, ingredients, and meal recipe from the nearby tables and containers.

Explore the rest of the asylum until you reach the point where Caradoc is waiting for you next to a hole in the wall. Grab the bow and arrows from the corpse near the fire, then head to the side opposite of Caradoc. Follow the way down, and you'll meet the first hidden boss.

The Wailing Effigy

The Wailing Effigy is a mutated humanoid with a large sword and the ability to sling fireballs at you. He's not terribly hard to beat given his simple moveset, but he does hit quite hard. Dodge or parry his attacks, sneak in some hits of your own, and he'll go down in no time.

Making full use of Dash and Dash Attacks is a great practice to get used to in this game.

When defeated, the Wailing Effigy will drop the Grief-Torn Armor and a Dull Broadsword. The latter is nothing special, but the Grief Torn Armor will give you 5 extra Max health and 2.0 points of Armor, all while being very light at only 2.5 units of Encumbrance.

The Frantic Berserker

Once you're done with the Wailing Effigy, head back the way you came, then go through the small hole in the wall to your left. This leads to an underground intersection — to your right is Sirja, who will give you a ring that boosts your Max Mana in exchange for a healing potion, and to your left is a massive pile of corpses with a door on the far side that must be lockpicked open. Head through the door and keep following the path until you reach the Frantic Berserker's cell.

This boss is unarmed, but his attacks still pack a mean punch. More importantly, hitting him with a melee weapon reflects some damage back to you, making it impossible to beat him in melee unless you have enough healing to offset the damage reflection.

The best way to fight him is to go up the ledge to the right and pelt him with arrows and magic. He doesn't have much health, so your choice of starting skills shouldn't matter. The 15 arrows you get from the corpse near Caradoc is more than enough to take him down.

Once dead, the Frantic Berserker will drop the Thorn Helmet, which reflects 5 Physical Damage back to melee attackers when you get hit. He'll also drop Athlete's Pride, a ring that increases your Max Stamina by 5.
