Cooking in Tales of the Shire is not an easy feat. You work with each ingredient separately, have to try to nail the right flavors for your guests, and cook and chop everything to the right consistency.
In order to get everything just right, you might be wondering just how the cooking system works in Tales of the Shire. This guide will break down what every item does and how to get the best possible recipes for your esteemed Hobbit guests.
Every Lord of the Rings Character Referenced in Tales of the Shire
Tales of the Shire is packed to the brim with references to the wider world of Middle-earth, including a handful of Lord of the Rings cameos.
How Cooking Works in Tales of the Shire
To get cooking in Tales of the Shire, you will need recipes first. Unlike some cooking mechanics in other games, you cannot experiment to learn how to make new dishes. New recipes are gained by completing side quests, feeding guests, and raising your relationship with other Hobbits.
- Walk up to the stove, then hit the interact button to start cooking for your guests in Tales of the Shire.
- Select a recipe and ingredients for it. You do not need to be holding the ingredients for your dish in your backpack; you can use ingredients from the pantry storage.
- You first have the option to chop your items. Small items, like nuts, will not be able to be chopped.
- You then move that individual item to be cooked or to be put in the final plating if it doesn't need to be cooked.
- Right before you cook, you have the option to season your food.
- Add that ingredient to the final plating, then move on to the next ingredient.
How to Make Textured Dishes in Tales of the Shire
While the cooking mini-game might seem simple at first, there are a lot of little things that are easy to miss or mess up. One of the best things to do early in Tales of the Shire is to learn how to make better versions of the dishes you already know, like Textured versions.
Textured dishes are higher-quality than normal dishes. You can create a Textured dish at any time with any kind of ingredients; you just need to hit the sweet spot in the texture grid. Each dish has a different location on the texture grid, which is located in the bottom right corner when cooking. This meter tells you the perfect texture that your dish can have, indicated by the yellow star inside a rectangle, and you need to line up the little picture of your dish with it. It will be somewhere between Tender and Crisp, Smooth and Chunky.
- To make a dish more Chunky, you need to chop it less.
- To make a dish more Smooth, you need to chop it more in this cozy Steam game.
- To make a dish more Crisp, you need to cook it less.
- To make a dish more Tender, you need to cook it longer.
How to Raise the Star Level of Your Dishes in Tales of the Shire
Raising the star level of cooked dishes is all about the quality of your ingredients. Underneath each ingredient is a star rating; some foods can have different star levels, raising the overall stats of the dish made. For example, you can grow your own potatoes, which can have higher stats than the ones you might get from a quest. Also, some fish from Tales of the Shire naturally have higher star ratings than others. The higher the star rating, the happier your dining Hobbit guests will be.
How Seasonings Work in Tales of the Shire
Seasonings work to change the flavor of one of your ingredients. For example, a Brown Tater is a Sweet ingredient. Adding salt to the Taters before cooking them will make the dish less Sweet and overall more Salty. There are several different types of Seasonings, and each one will alter the flavor profile in the bottom middle of the screen when cooking.
