Update 2.04 for Tekken 8 is out now, bringing a number of new features, costumes, and display options to the game without making any character changes or balance adjustments. The August 5 update also saw a wave of player accounts get banned by Tekken 8's developer, Bandai Namco, due to user reports and violations of the game's End User License Agreement.
Bandai Namco's previous updates for Tekken 8 have proven to be controversial among the fighting game's fan base, particularly those released during its second season. A wave of criticism of the Tekken 8 Season 2 update forced Bandai Namco to release multiple emergency patches, backtracking on significant and unpopular changes to the game's core gameplay over the course of multiple months. Notably, the newest update for Tekken 8 does not make any adjustments to the game's balance at all, and could even signal a focus shift from gameplay adjustments to bug fixes.
Tekken 8 Director Gives Update on Fan Requested Waffle House Stage
Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada shares a surprising update about the possibility of combining the worlds of Tekken 8 and Waffle House.
Update 2.04 for Tekken 8 adds two swimsuit costume packs to the Tekken Shop, special combat challenges with unlockable bonus content, additional Photo Mode options, and a new throw break training mode. The update does not make any adjustments to the game's balance, leaving the Tekken 8 character tier list largely unchanged. According to the patch notes, Bandai Namco intentionally left the game's battle balance alone to accommodate major eSports tournaments that are scheduled for August.
Although the update doesn't make any changes to the game's core gameplay, it does add five Special Ghosts to the Tekken Fight Lounge, with each one offering unique character panels for players to unlock by defeating them in battle. The update also adds 36 character-specific swimsuit costumes between the two summer-themed cosmetic packs now available for purchase: 25 via the Seaside Pack and 11 from the Beach Fun Pack. Characters excluded from the costume packs are Kuma, Panda, and any playable DLC characters released for Tekken 8 from Armor King onward.
According to the patch notes, future updates for Tekken 8 will prioritize bug fixes, starting with Update 2.05 in September. With at least two more DLC characters for Tekken 8 planned for release later this year, players can expect many more balancing updates to come, but for now, it seems Bandai Namco is slowing down on making any more major changes and focusing on fine-tuning. Considering the wave of outrage the developer experienced with the tumultuous Tekken 8 Season 2 debut, it could be that Bandai Namco has finally regained its footing and is positioned to win its players back.
