The lawsuit between Sony and Tencent concerning a project that looked similar to the Horizon series has already made an impact, as Light of Motiram removed some things that Sony called out in the ongoing litigation. While references to Horizon were seemingly removed from Light of Motiram's Steam page, Tencent subsidiary Polaris Quest also revealed the game's release window.

Horizon Sales July 2025

On July 25, a lawsuit was filed in a California federal court by Sony against Tencent and its subsidiary, Polaris Quest, regarding the upcoming open-world game Light of Motiram. Sony accused Tencent of creating a "slavish clone" of the Horizon series, and said that gameplay elements and character designs from Horizon were ripped off to create Light of Motiram. One of the focal points of Sony's copyright infringement case against Tencent concerned Light of Motiram's red-haired female protagonist, who wielded a bow and looked similar to Horizon's protagonist, Aloy. Even though Tencent initially approached Sony to license the Horizon IP for a potential mobile spin-off in 2024, Sony rejected the pitch.

Light of Motiram Makes Changes Amid Horizon Lawsuit

While Sony's lawsuit against Tencent remains in place, Tencent and Polaris Quest made some changes in response. As reported by TheGamePost, the Steam page for Light of Motiram now has a different description and new pictures that seemingly remove any references to the Horizon series. While the initial description for Light of Motiram referenced "mechanimals" and "colossal machines" similar to the ones in the Horizon series, these have been altered to be broader in scope. Light of Motiram's description states that players must survive in an "unforgiving land" against "formidable bosses" and challenges. Several images for Light of Motiram have been changed to remove any references to the Aloy lookalike, as robotic penguin and dog mascots now appear on the game's key art. Additionally, Light of Motiram was given a tentative release window of Q4 2027.

Although Light of Motiram has made changes to its game in response to the litigation, it is not the only title to have done so. The ongoing lawsuit between Nintendo and Pocketpair resulted in the hit survival game Palworld making changes that removed any references to throwing a ball at a monster, much like how a Pokemon trainer throws a Poke Ball.

Both Sony's and Nintendo's respective lawsuits remain active as of this writing. Despite the changes made by Light of Motiram, the ongoing litigation between Sony and Tencent may be the tip of the iceberg as major video game developers continue to protect their IPs and trademarks.
