Summary
- A translation error in Tetris 99’s latest update makes it seem like players can sell back themes to get tickets in return.
- Instead, the new feature allows players to obtain previous event themes for 30 tickets each—not sell them back.
- The update also introduces some adjustments aimed at making the game more comfortable to play.
Nintendo has released a new update for its popular PvP game Tetris 99, allowing players to pick up previous event themes for 30 in-game tickets—though a translation error made it seem as if players could sell back themes to get tickets. Update 2.5.0 is a pretty small patch, only adding this new option for players while introducing some adjustments to Tetris 99's gameplay.
Tetris has a storied history in the video game industry, starting in the Soviet Union with the original title released in 1984. After its massive success, the puzzle game spawned several different versions, all of them retaining its core mechanic. Tetris 99 is a modern PvP take on the original formula, introducing competitive mechanics that pit players against each other in a match that follows the logic of a battle royale game. As its very name indicates, players must face 98 other opponents, and only one can win. The game quickly became popular, amassing a large player base, with thousands of Tetris fans joining for highly challenging matches. Now, the developer has released an update to bring a useful feature to players—though the English translation of the patch notes may be a little confusing.
The Nintendo Switch Online free-to-play game Tetris 99 has received update 2.5.0, allowing players to get previous event themes for 30 in-game tickets. However, as noted by BlueSky user @OatmealDomethe, the English translation on the American Nintendo Support site makes it look as if players could sell back themes to get tickets—which is just a mistranslation.

Although Tetris 99 themes can’t be sold back, following update 2.5.0, players of the popular PvP multiplayer puzzle game will be able to obtain themes like Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Miitopia, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Monster Hunter Rise, Metroid Dread, and WarioWare: Move It for 30 in-game tickets each. Moreover, the update introduces some adjustments that, according to Nintendo, are meant to “make the game more comfortable to play.”
Tetris 99 has received many updates since its release, some of them introducing new content and events for players. In March, Tetris 99 crossed over with Xenoblade Chronicles X during the 46th Maximus Cup event, where players competed for points and the chance to win the Xenoblade Chronicles X theme. Before that, Tetris 99 had crossed over with other popular games like Splatoon 3 and Zelda: Skyward Sword. Nintendo Switch users can already install update 2.5.0 and enjoy the new feature to get previous event themes.
