Although Tetris was first released in 1984 for the Electronika 60, the iconic puzzle game rose most in popularity when Nintendo decided to launch it with the Game Boy in 1989. Since then, Tetris has become one of Nintendo's most influential games and multiple versions of it have been published over the years. Tetris 99, a battle-royale variation of Tetris released in 2019, proved to be very popular among Nintendo Switch players. Now, Nintendo has revealed a new compilation to celebrate the history of Tetris.

Tetris Forever is a compilation of over 15 versions of Tetris from years past, intended to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original tile-matching game. As confirmed during the latest Nintendo Direct, Tetris Forever is coming to Nintendo Switch later this year and it will include the 1988 Famicom version of Tetris and other historic sequels like Tetris 2 + BomBliss and Super Tetris 3. The collection will also introduce the brand-new Tetris Time Warp, a game where players will jump between gameplay styles from across the Tetris series. Finally, Tetris Forever will feature exclusive documentary content about the history of the series, which is one of the best-selling video game franchises ever.

Tetris Forever Will Include Over 15 Classic Games

Some of the games in Tetris Forever have their origins on the Game Boy and the Super Nintendo, and although not all titles have been revealed yet, some prominent Tetris games are to be featured in Tetris Forever.

As mentioned before, Tetris Forever is expected to be released for Nintendo Switch later this year. The developers also announced that Nintendo Switch Online is adding the NES version of Tetris this winter, and a Tetris 99 Maximus Cup event will be held during the same season.

Forty years may have passed, but the Tetris fanbase is more active than ever, with players trying to beat their scores and competing in Tetris tournaments every day. Earlier this year, a 13-year-old player "beat" NES Tetris for the first time in history, showing that the legacy of Tetris remains strong even among younger generations. With the arrival of Tetris Forever, players will experience the early days of the game and witness how far it has come.
