The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was launched back in 2023, and it served as a competitor to asymmetrical horror heavy-hitter Dead by Daylight. While the latter has remained king of the genre, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was a fresh take that brought players into the world of the iconic movie franchise.

Leatherface is a modern-day boogeyman with a horrifying appearance and a love for shredding innocent people with a hefty chainsaw. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game was an attempt to combine the world of that iconic character with asymmetrical horror gameplay, and it seemed like a great idea. Unfortunately, the game's player count has dwindled significantly since its launch, leaving publisher Gun Interactive with the difficult decision to end The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's support following its May update.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Will No Longer Receive Updates After May 2025

While there have been some major updates to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre since its launch, players should not expect more of them after the release of the May patch. Indeed, the game will no longer be receiving DLCs, bug fixes, or balance changes, marking the end of an era for the horror title. Gun Interactive's official statement about ending support for the game was still in good spirits, though. Addressing the update, spokesperson Cidnya Silva wrote on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's official blog, "We feel proud of the game we’ve made, and we’re happy that we’re at a point where we feel The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has reached its full potential."

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre film was released in theaters on October 11, 1974.

Despite Ending Support, There is Still Good News for Texas Chain Saw Massacre Lovers

  • The game will still remain fully playable after May.
  • It is not being delisted from storefronts.
  • After this month, the game will begin transitioning to peer-to-peer matchmaking.

On the bright side, those who really love The Texas Chain Saw Massacre won't have to completely say goodbye to the game. After May, players can still enjoy plenty of heart-pounding, asymmetrical gameplay. There just won't be any fresh content to look forward to. Another big win for the Texas Chain Saw Massacre community is that the game will remain available through online storefronts, meaning that those who become interested in the title in the future will still be able to give it a try.

It can be really difficult for a live-service game to maintain its player count when there are so many options available, and when a game's support ends, it is often delisted and becomes unplayable. Such an approach will be taken when Resident Evil Re:Verse's shuts down at the end of this month, and it was used when Gun Interactive's Friday the 13th: The Game shut down in 2024.

For the uninitiated, Friday the 13th: The Game's servers were shut down in December of last year, and it is a bit surprising that the same fate is not planned for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. While there may be no clear answer as to why Friday the 13th: The Game fully ended while The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is spared, players who are still enjoying the game will certainly be happy to find that it is still playable even after the content updates have ended.

We feel proud of the game we’ve made, and we’re happy that we’re at a point where we feel The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has reached its full potential.

Gun Interactive's Next Project Remains a Mystery

The official announcement of the end of the game's service concluded with, "What’s next for Gun?...Stay tuned." This could potentially be teasing that the reveal of another game is on the horizon, but this remains to be seen. After publishing games like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Friday the 13th: The Game, one has to wonder if Gun Interactive may be gearing up to announce a title inspired by yet another horror franchise.
