Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 is caught in a storm of cancellation rumors after lead star Robert Pattinson’s filming schedule suddenly got busier. The actor signed on for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which is currently filming, possibly to play the role of Hermes if speculation rings true. Additionally, Pattinson was recently touted for a significant role in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune 3, which will adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah novel, and these projects have caused some unrest for The Batman fans considering the project’s delays.

The 38-year-old English actor soared to stardom after his roles in the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, before flaunting the full spectrum of his acting chops through A24’s Good Time, Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse, and lending his impressive vocal talents to Studio Ghibli’s English cast for The Boy and the Heron. Included in his recent endeavors, Pattinson’s sci-fi trip Mickey 17 quickly found its streaming home after an underwhelming cinema run, and adding to his aforementioned blockbusters in the pipeline, the actor has more projects in post-production, including Kristoffer Borgli’s The Drama starring Dune star Zendaya.

The Batman Part 2’s Cancelation Rumors Soar After Robert Pattinson’s Filming Schedule Boosts

Recent reports alleged Pattinson would be playing the villain Scytale in Dune 3, which is considered a major role in the narrative, despite no word of a formal offer being given. After breaking the news for Deadline, journalist Justin Kroll needed to clarify a few details about the actor’s busy schedule to temper fans’ panic about potential scheduling conflicts with The Batman Part 2. Kroll confirmed Dune 3 would begin filming this summer, and since the project is an ensemble movie like The Odyssey, Pattinson’s screen time would be shorter, leaving space to film The Batman Part 2 when it enters production.

Following the delay of Reeves’ anticipated sequel to 2027, Pattinson joked that he’d be old by the time The Batman Part 2 started filming. However, the actor previously said that production would begin at the end of the year, potentially leaving the summer and fall of 2025 wide open for Pattinson to complete his part in The Odyssey and film Dune 3 if the rumored role is accepted. The star’s large-scale projects understandably concern Batman fans, on the heels of a release date delay and DC Studios head James Gunn’s admission confirming Reeves had not finished Part 2’s script.

Pattinson’s Batman universe exists in DC Studios’ Elseworlds continuity, which was designed to remain separate from the canon in Gunn’s main DC Universe. Therefore, comic book fans will be painfully aware that the search for DC’s central Caped Crusader is ongoing, even though Reacher star Alan Ritchson claimed he would play Batman for free. Some popular names attached to the fan casts include 1923’s Brandon Sklenar and The Boys star Jensen Ackles, who recently voiced the world’s greatest detective in the animations Batman: The Long Halloween and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The Batman Part 2 is currently scheduled to release on October 1, 2027.
