The Batman - Part II is one of the most highly-anticipated sequels in recent memory, but it’s been hit with unfortunate delays to filming. Now, one of the minds behind the upcoming project weighs in on where things stand, and its good news for fans.

The Batman left an indelible mark on the DC cinematic landscape when it released in 2022, standing out as a critically acclaimed win for the brand and giving fans a certified new Batman in Robert Pattinson, while the Zack Snyder-led DC Extended Universe crawled towards its demise. Despite being an Elseworld project with no relation to any other projects in development, plans for a sequel film would survive the James Gun takeover, while The Penguin would make it through despite Matt Reeves having to can other spinoffs at WBD’s request to better focus on the bigger narratives and characters as per the company’s strategy going forward. While it was confirmed in 2022 after the success of the first film, that sequel project has been a bit slow on the update, much to the chagrin of fans.

While fans are eager to get their hands on the next entry in what Reeves calls ‘The Batman Epic Crime Saga’ in The Batman - Part II, there have been some regrettable delays in the production of the sequel. However, there’s a clear view on what’s going on behind the scenes now thanks to the project’s co-writer, Mattson Tomlin, who is developing the screenplay with Reeves. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the scribe revealed to fans when they can expect the project to begin filming, as well as giving props to his collaborator and promising moviegoers something that lives up to the hype of the first successful outing in the planned trilogy.

It's shooting next year. We're gearing up, and I will say that the bar just couldn't be higher. It's the sequel to the first one. But also, Matt [Reeves] is like no other. In the five years now that I've been working with him as closely as I have, I've tried to absorb as much as humanly possible from him, and I'm so grateful for the time that I get to spend with him, because he is a true artist who is operating in a world where sometimes art doesn't get to flourish, and he's trying to make something that really matters. So to be able to just be on the ride and be part of that process, it's pretty unbelievable, pretty tremendous. I'm psyched for the movie.

Filming on the project was delayed primarily by the double strike action of the Screen Actors and Writers’ Guilds in 2023, which ground most development and production to a halt across the board. This caught the project in early production, halting work on the script and precluding any potential set work that might have sped up production post-strike. This delay in production is mirrored by its predecessor, with the first Pattinson-led Batman adventure being hindered by COVID-19 back in 2020. The 2020 hiccup didn’t stop the first film from delivering a certified hit, of course, but the outlook on that film wasn’t particularly optimistic going into it. By contrast, the sequel has all the confidence and hype earned by the first project behind it, and fans will be all the more loathe to suffer delays in its production and eventual release. With a 2026 release window still tentatively on the table, thanks to its lower-than-average need for over-the-top special effects when compared to many other projects in the genre, the hope backstage is probably that no further issues pop up.

The Dark Knight has been proving just how much he deserves his shrouded spot as the face of DC, with Batman: Caped Crusader dethroning The Boys over on Prime Video while Reeves’ sequel film and Joker: Folie à Deux collect more fan anticipation than most mainline superhero franchise films have garnered from either major company in years. While things may be a bit behind schedule on The Batman - Part II, there’s little doubt among fans that the project will be worth the wait when it finally hits theaters around the world.

The Batman - Part II is currently set for theatrical release on October 2, 2026.]
