Summary

  • The Batman Part 2 release date pushed to 2027 due to unfinished script.
  • Alejandro González Iñárritu film with Tom Cruise takes 2026 release slot.
  • Director Matt Reeves committed to creating the best possible sequel, according to James Gunn.

While James Gunn’s plans for the DCU continue to take shape, there’s more bad news for one of the most celebrated franchises that isn’t actually a part of the new DC cinematic universe. Fans are quite excited about the next installment of Robert Pattinson’s The Batman series, but people are going to be waiting quite a while to see the continuation of that tale.

The Batman got rave reviews when it hit theaters and streaming because it seemed to offer a rather grounded view of a younger version of Bruce Wayne and the Dark Knight. Pattinson, who played the titular character took the mantle from Ben Affleck, who was a relatively popular version of the character in the DCEU but with the reboot fully underway with the arrival of James Gunn, Pattinson is now the banner carrier, at least until Gunn announces who will play the DCU version of Batman. Originally, fans of the famed detective and crime fighter were expecting to see The Batman Part 2 in 2026, though that’s no longer the plan.

The Batman Part 2 Gets Booted Back One Year

Deadline reported earlier on Friday that The Batman Part 2 was officially moved to a 2027 release date. In its place, the the Alejandro González Iñárritu directed untitled movie with Tom Cruise will slide into the October 2, 2026 release window while Matt Reeves’ next feature film is now expected on October 1, 2027.

A few hours after initial reports started surfacing about The Batman Part 2 being pushed back, DC Chief James Gunn confirmed that is indeed the plan. He cited a familiar reason for the delay, taking to Threads to say that the script still isn’t complete. He want on to make it clear that this isn’t a situation where Warner Bros. Or Gunn has any crisis of confidence about the movie, it’s simply a matter of where the project is in production without a finished script.

“Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films."

The update is far from a huge surprise, considering there have been rumors and whispers about a delay since earlier this fall. There even had been some rumors that The Batman Part 2 had been officially canceled. However, those rumors never made a ton of sense considering the success of The Penguin as a standalone series on HBO Max. Gunn and Reeves have both been working hard to deny the talk of an outright cancellation. However, it’s clear that the rumors were coming from talk about a delay. The Batman was released back in 2022. With its sequel now not hitting theaters until at least 2027, it will have been five years since Pattison put on the cowl and fought Gotham’s most dangerous criminals. And it’s worth pointing out that the October release date is not entirely locked in if the script isn't done.

The Batman Part 2 is slated for an October 1, 2027 release date
