- Despite ongoing challenges, fans can expect The Batman: Part 2 to move forward, as Warner Bros. Is committed to Reeves.
Once again, fresh word is out concerning the troubled future of The Batman: Part 2; once again, it’s not good news. This time, it’s about the script, or lack thereof. However, it's an open secret at this stage.
The Batman: Part 2 has had a rough few months with its multiple delays — with the current one in October 2027. But the past few days have been rougher. It all began with the reports of Robert Pattinson potentially joining Dune 3. Fans speculated that this means the end of The Batman sequel since it is — or was — scheduled to commence shooting at the end of the year while Denis Villeneuve’s movie shoots this summer. The status of The Batman: Part 2’s script has been hotly debated, not helped by the seemingly conflicting statements from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn and director Matt Reeves. While the former says a first draft has yet to be officially turned in, the latter says a huge part has already been submitted to DC Studios.
RUMOR: The Batman Part 2's Future May Be On Shakier Ground Than Anyone Thought
The Batman Part 2 has been hotly anticipated, but its future may not be looking promising.
Speaking to Deadline about the future of the studio, embattled Warner Bros. Pictures heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy — already deep within the fury of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav who wishes to oust them — addressed the limbo status of The Batman: Part 2. And it wasn’t positive: a script is yet to be submitted.
“We’re not in the weeds on the Batman stuff. It’s really James and Peter Safran who run DC. We have a bit of other collaboration with Matt Reeves, but Peter and James know he is a writer-directing auteur in his own right, and that it will come when he’s written his best Batman script and is ready.”
Warner Bros. Has a Lot of Questions to Answer Concerning The Batman: Part 2
They Mostly Start With “When?”
Naturally, fans have a lot of questions. Why has it taken so long to develop even a draft of the script, especially considering that James Gunn came on board after The Batman and has already written and shot Superman? Why has Warner Bros been so patient with Matt Reeves? And, perhaps most importantly, will The Batman: Part 2 ever see the light of day? On the first, scooper Grace Randolph believes it has to do with a personal matter with Matt Reeves on the scale of a “Chadwick Boseman situation” and not for lack of trying. If true, it might help answer why Warner Bros. Is patient with Reeves, although this may not be everlasting. Reputed American journalist Jeff Sneider sees the Studio showing the filmmaker the door if things aren’t sorted before the end of the year.
This leads to the final question: the fate of The Batman: Part 2. If fans were worried about the movie’s cancellation, Abdy’s statements imply that they need not be. DC Studios is under a separate administration from Warner Bros. Pictures, and thus, the duo of Gunn and Peter Safran call the shots. And it’s already obvious that the rumor of the delay stemming from a misunderstanding between Gunn and Reeves is false.
For now, it seems that Warner Bros. Is determined to stick with Reeves no matter the cost, though this has the potential to alienate content-hungry fans. But fans can rest easy that The Batman: Part 2 is still happening. Warner Bros would shoot itself in the leg if the thought to axe the sequel to one of DC’s success stories in recent times ever shines through.
