In episode 4 of The Beginning After the End anime, we see that Arthur is experiencing mysterious pains as he guides the elf girl Tessia back to her home. While the reason for these pains has not been explained, they continue to bother Arthur as he travels.

As the pains only seem to be worsening, Arthur is unaware of the potential consequences and danger they could have on his future training. Luckily for Arthur, he will soon meet a wise mentor who can correctly diagnose the issue and adjust his training so that he stands the best chance of overcoming this mysterious affliction.

Arthur’s pains in The Beginning After the End suddenly began after his meeting with Sylvia, and that is no coincidence. Right before Sylvia bid him farewell, she imparted several gifts to him to protect him in the future. One of these was an egg containing a mana beast, and the other was her beast will.

Although mana beasts like Sylvia normally pass their beast will onto their offspring, she decided to give hers to Arthur instead. This beast will should be a huge boon for Arthur in the future, granting him additional powers and letting him become a beast tamer. However, there is a hidden downside that Sylvia didn’t tell Arthur before he departed: her beast will is too strong for the current Arthur.

“You’ve been having bouts of searing pain where your mana core is, right? And those bouts are coming more frequently?” -Virion, Tessia’s grandfather, observing Arthur after their sparring match.

In the manhwa, the elf elder Virion reveals that Sylvia’s beast will is too strong for Arthur to handle at the moment. This is because of how powerful of a mana beast she was when she passed it on.

If Arthur had continued training and using his mana core as he was before, he would likely have been destroyed by his beast will without even knowing what caused it. Fortunately, he is able to meet Virion, whose experience as a beast tamer allowed him to diagnose Arthur’s hidden problem in a way no one else possibly could.

“Your mana usage is mediocre at best, but i can see how you were able to kill a few slave traders.” -Virion

Virion reveals that Arthur will need to put his mana core training on hold until he can directly conquer the beast within him, setting his progression back quite a bit. However, in the end, while Arthur will miss out on some early progress, the time it takes to master his new beast will end up being worth it because of how powerful the mana beast that gave it to him was. Still, the journey to master becoming a beast tamer will not be easy or painless for Arthur.

In The Beginning After the End manhwa, Arthur spends the next three years in the elf kingdom trying to master his beast will, a testament to how grueling and difficult becoming a beast tamer is, even for someone as talented as Arthur. Being called an assimilation process isn’t just a turn of phrase; it's also literal. Virion explains the reason it takes so long is that Arthur essentially has to fuse his organs and skeletal structure with his mana to even be able to contain the beast will.

Virion eventually oversees Arthur’s assimilation process to completion, igniting his beast will and training Arthur to be a true beast tamer. Arthur got lucky with this; if he had spent those three years training normally, he might not have survived to become such a powerhouse main character.
