Summary
- Jacob can use a variety of weapons, including melee and sidearms, to survive in The Callisto Protocol and take down enemies.
- Not all weapons in the game are equal in terms of strength and reliability, and some have better upgrades that require Callisto Credits.
- Upgrading weapons like the Stun Baton, UJC Special Ops Tactical Pistol, and Hand Cannon can make them more effective and powerful in combat.
In order to survive the nightmarish hell of Black Iron Prison in The Callisto Protocol, Jacob is going to need to use every weapon at his disposal if he wants any chance of making it out in one piece, and luckily, he's got more than a few to choose from. While the combat in The Callisto Protocol is very melee-focused for the most part, Jacob can also make use of his sidearms to pick off enemies from afar or to execute a quick shot when the prompt shows up after each swing.

With that being said, though, while there's a good number of guns and melee weapons to acquire throughout the course of Jacob's adventure, not all of them are equal in terms of strength and reliability. Additionally, some have much better upgrades that can be acquired by spending Callisto Credits, but which weapons are worth prioritizing?
8 Shiv
- How to unlock: Given to Jacob by Elias at the start of the game.
The shiv is gifted to Jacob very early on in the game after finding a survivor behind some cell bars who offers to help Jacob out if he can help the stranger escape the prison. The shiv has multiple uses, such as being able to open sealed chests and closed doors, but it's mostly going to be used as a deadly stealth weapon to take down unsuspecting enemies from behind, which can prevent encounters from getting ugly.
Unfortunately, while there are plenty of stealth opportunities early on during the tutorial sections, there are not as many chances to sneak around later on, so the shiv very much just becomes useful for entering secret areas and securing loot from chests. It's also the only weapon that cannot be upgraded, which can make it quite forgettable and not nearly as effective as its competition.
7 Stun Baton
- How to unlock: Picked up from a corpse after escaping the Med Ward.
Because of how crunchy and satisfying the melee combat feels in The Callisto Protocol, it can initially seem like the Stun Baton is actually quite strong. It is at the beginning, but it becomes much less effective and quite risky to use after the first chapter. Therefore, it requires a lot of upgrading for it to take down enemies fast enough to make it out of encounters without a scratch, but luckily, there are a lot of fun attacks that can be acquired this way.
7 Scariest Horror Game Trailers
Horror fans have been given many games over the years with some terrifying trailers, and here are the scariest ones so far
The Riot Control Swing attack, for example, gives Jacob a heavy alternative to the regular swings, which will make the weapon much more viable in the future. The truth is, though, if players don't prioritize upgrading the Stun Baton from the start, the melee combat will only be useful for stunning enemies while the firearms do all the heavy lifting.
6 UJC Special Ops Tactical Pistol
- How to unlock: Found in a locker room to the left of the first Field Log.
The Tactical Pistol is an optional weapon that players will be able to find during Chapter Six, but it's well worth seeking out for anyone who wants a quick and snappy firearm that's capable of firing multiple shots at once. While the base damage of the weapon is admittedly very low, the pistol does make up for this slightly thanks to the 5-round burst alternate fire mode, which it acquires after upgrading.
There are only a handful of upgrades for the gun, which means it can become incredibly strong very quickly, but since each of the upgrades are quite expensive, it will take a lot of investment to make it truly effective. Still, the speed of the weapon and low recoil do mean it's more than usable for most encounters in the game.
5 GRP
- How to unlock: picked up from a corpse in Ward 03
For anyone who has played Dead Space before, the GRP (Gravity Restraint Projector) essentially works the same as the Kinesis Module, which is able to pick up objects and toss them around to either stun or kill enemies. There are actually plenty of benefits to the GRP that make it a pretty handy weapon, including the fact that while it does need to be recharged, it's still the only ranged weapon with infinite ammo, which can make it a real lifesaver in certain situations.
The Callisto Protocol: Where to Find All Implant Bios
The Callisto Protocol hides some collectibles inside the dead bodies of crew members, which makes finding them all a unique quest for players.
It also has a ton of upgrades, all of which increase the speed and strength of the device, but since it heavily relies on the environment to be effective, it's not exactly the most reliable weapon. This means that while in some scenarios it can instantly kill an enemy if a sharp pole or spike is lying around, in other instances, Jacob might only have a small chair or box to toss forward, so it's useful to have, but not something worth investing too many Credits into.
4 BI-55 Pistol Hand Cannon
- How to unlock: Found after regrouping with Elias at the beginning of the game.
The very first firearm that Jacob acquires is more than capable of taking down the horrors that roam around Black Iron Prison, especially when aiming for the head, and it will actually remain pretty powerful for the first few chapters. As tankier enemy types are introduced, though, and the bosses become much tougher, the Hand Cannon will need to be upgraded to keep up. It's a good thing then that the upgrades for the Hand Cannon are among some of the best in the entire game, especially the Boom Bullets.
Boom Bullets are explosive rounds that will create a small explosion upon impact, making them ideal for clearing out small groups of enemies without using up too much ammunition. The slow speed of the gun can hold it back a little bit, but if players can look past this and manage to save up enough credits, they should definitely consider upgrading the Hand Cannon at least a few times.
3 UJC Special Ops Assault Rifle
- How to unlock: Found in a bathroom on the second level of the Colony.
Despite being the very last weapon schematic in the game that players can find, the Spec Ops Assault Rifle is still a very reliable weapon that can become extremely strong after spending a few Callisto Credits. Rather than being fully automatic, the assault rifle is actually a 3-round burst weapon, which might lower the damage but also helps out the accuracy a lot.
The very first upgrade will allow the weapon to accept high-capacity magazines, which really helps with clearing out entire rooms of enemies and works well at keeping foes like the exploding Combustors at a safe distance. It's just a shame that the weapon arrives so late in the game since this leaves little to no time for it to be upgraded, but it's nonetheless still very strong, even in its base form.
2 Skunkworks Shotgun "Skunk Gun"
- How to unlock: Found in Basement D3 by using a Gate Fuse found in Basement D4.
While it might look more like a pistol on the surface, the Skunk Gun is actually a small sawed-off shotgun that possesses incredibly high stopping power and is capable of taking down a lot of regular enemies with a single blow. Since it appears early on in the game, it can make the first few chapters an absolute breeze, especially when adding a high-capacity magazine and foregrip to help stabilize the accuracy.
The Best Shotguns In Gaming
Out of all the amazing shotguns that feature in gaming, these are some of the very best.
The only real downside, which can become a problem when facing multiple enemies at once, is that it only holds 2 shots to start off with, which can make it a little unreliable, but in the right hands, it can be absolutely devastating. Rather than trying to damage enemies from a distance, this weapon is best used for executing quick shots after a successful melee attack. Unlike the Hand Cannon, which will usually require multiple shots to take down enemies this way, the Skunk Gun will almost always require just one. The final upgrade, Swarming Rounds, even allows bullets to home onto enemies, which can make the spread of the shots much less of a problem, ensuring as much damage is dished out as possible.
1 TK4 Riot Shotgun "Riot Gun"
- How to unlock: Given to Jacob by Dani after meeting her in the garage.
There's no weapon in a survival horror game that can make a player feel safe quite like a shotgun, and this most certainly applies to the Riot Gun. The high damage makes it the best weapon in the game for dealing with bosses, and it actually holds a considerable amount of ammunition for a shotgun, which largely negates the slow reload speed issue.
Somehow, it also has extremely cheap upgrades that can enhance the magazine capacity, increase accuracy, and even allow the weapon to shoot out explosive projectiles, which gives it even more crowd-control potential. The Riot Gun is a very cheap and easy gun to use, but players should make sure to keep an eye on the magazine since reloading can be a little bit of a pain.
