Supermassive Games may unveil the next chapter in its interactive horror series The Dark Pictures Anthology at Gamescom 2024. The first season of The Dark Pictures Anthology wrapped up in 2022 with The Devil in Me, and fans have been waiting for the next entry in the series since its well-received release.

The Dark Pictures games provide players with hints by leading them to pictures that show brief video clips of scenes to come, similar to the tarot cards in The Quarry. Players are then tasked with making difficult choices that could potentially kill some of the controllable characters in the game. The final pictures to be discovered in each of the four games in the series' first season were used to tease a potential death in the following title. This was the case in The Devil in Me, which also showed a trailer for the series' second season following its credits.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020 Should Take Its Eyes Off the Movies

Rather than drawing from Hollywood, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Directive 8020 should look to some of gaming's most horrifying hits for inspiration.

The first game slated for The Dark Pictures Anthology Season Two is Directive 8020, which puts a sci-fi twist on the series' well-established horror style, setting it in outer space. A post from Supermassive Games' official Twitter account on July 8 mentions the upcoming Gamescom 2024 event, stating that it will be "out of this world." While the post doesn't specifically state that Supermassive will be making an announcement about Directive 8020 at Gamescom, the cryptic words are laid over the image of a purple planet that may be familiar to players who saw the trailer at the end of The Devil in Me. Gamescom is scheduled to run from August 21 until August 25.

The Dark Pictures Season 2 May Be Revealed At Gamescom 2024

Directive 8020 isn't the only project that Supermassive is currently focused on. The developer is also gearing up for the release of The Casting of Frank Stone, a narrative-focused Dead by Daylight spin-off with similar gameplay as The Dark Pictures games, as well as The Quarry a nd the Until Dawn remake. The Casting of Frank Stone is set to launch on September 3, so it may also appear at Gamescom 2024.

Fans wonder what new direction the series will take following the passing of Dark Pictures actor Tony Pankhurst. While Supermassive is often keen to include bits of dialogue and other Easter eggs alluding to its other games, Pankhurst's portrayal of The Curator was the only thing tying the four games in the first season together as a cohesive story. A personification of death, The Curator greets players at the start of each game in his study, where he tells them a story of death that they must help complete. The character continues to pop up from time to time to comment on the story's progress and to offer hints on how to keep everyone alive.
