- Despite the cancelation, fans should stay tuned for The Division Resurgence, a mobile game set to release in 2024.
- The canceled Heartland opens the opportunity for a potential major release with The Division 3.
According to Ubisoft’s earnings report, the studio has decided to cancel The Division Heartland, a free-to-play survival spin-off of the survival-action shooter franchise set in post-pandemic North America. This announcement naturally comes as a hard pill to swallow for fans of The Division franchise, especially considering the state of the franchise and how far along the development of The Division Heartland seemingly was by this point.
However, fans should remain hopeful that The Division franchise will still get its moment in the spotlight in due time. In the meantime of The Division Heartland’s cancelation, Ubisoft will be referring the development team behind the game, Red Storm Entertainment, to assist in the development of other upcoming Ubisoft-owned IPs. Specifically, the studio is said to be prioritizing XDefiant and the Rainbow Six franchise.
What’s Next for The Division Franchise after The Division Heartland's Cancelation?
The Division Heartland would have marked the latest console and PC addition to the franchise in over five years, so despite being billed as a spin-off, longtime fans of the franchise were relatively eager to get their hands on a new game in the series. Hence why The Division Heartland being canceled is cause for concern. However, despite Ubisoft announcing the game’s cancelation, there’s still more in store for The Division franchise in 2024 alone, and more down the road.
The Division Resurgence is Coming Soon
The next upcoming addition to The Division franchise is expected to be the free-to-play mobile game, The Division Resurgence, which is still anticipated for a 2024 release window. It’s been a little while now since any official update on this game and its release date have been announced, although, in the context of The Division Heartland’s cancelation, no news is arguably good news. As a mobile game, this addition to the franchise has the potential to reach a larger audience than a console and PC release, so this game’s performance could prove to be vital for the future of the franchise.
The Division 2’s is Getting a New DLC in 2025
In the meantime of The Division Resurgence’s imminent release, there’s still plenty of existing and upcoming content in The Division 2 to potentially keep new and longtime fans of the franchise busy. Specifically, The Division 2 is still expected to get a new DLC sometime in 2025. This comes after The Division 2’s recent Project Resolve series of updates that have brought several QOL changes and a 2.0 revamp of the in-game seasonal content.
The Division 3 Has Already Been Confirmed
Following the announcement of The Division Heartland’s cancelation, many fans have begun to speculate that, after the upcoming mobile game, the next major game in the franchise will be The Division 3, instead of another spin-off. Although given the recent cancelation and Ubisoft’s current priorities it’s likely going to be a while before fans receive any updates on The Division 3.
The Division 3 was announced in September of 2023 and its development is said to take priority after Ubisoft ships Star Wars Outlaws, which is set to release on August 30, 2024.
At any rate, The Division franchise has strong roots and a dedicated fanbase, so despite The Division Heartland’s cancellation, the demand for a new major addition to The Division franchise is still at an all-time high, especially considering that the release of The Division 2 was over five years ago. With a new mobile game and DLC for The Division 2 still on the way, this could be just the kind of breathing room that the franchise needs to make a major comeback down the road, whether this turns out to be the release of another spin-off or The Division 3. Consequently, while the recent cancelation is still unfortunate, The Division franchise is far from over.
