Summary
- The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim's popularity is sustained by the robust modding community creating new content and experiences.
- The upcoming mod "The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis" will offer fully voiced expansion, new enemies, characters, and stories for players.
- This expansion, set in the Dreamsleeve, presents a non-linear gameplay allowing players to make choices that impact the story and characters.
One of the reasons The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim has remained so popular for over a decade is because of the ease of modding it. Massive modding projects have added entire expansion packs worth of content that are fully voiced, with new characters and systems to Skyrim that would not have existed if it hadn't been for its modding community. One of the biggest modding projects currently in development for The Elder Scrolls is The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis.
With the subtitle When Dead Gods Dream, the Skyrim mod is a fully voiced and scored expansion that takes across the planes of Oblivion and a new, original plane, the Dreamsleeve. The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis will feature new locations, boss fights, characters, and a new home for the player character found within the mod's new location of Dreamsleeve.
The Story Behind The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis
Apotheosis is a term used in literature to refer to the process of becoming a god. This has happened several times before in The Elder Scrolls lore, with the most notable examples being Tiber Septim becoming Talos and the Hero of Kvatch becoming the Daedric Prince Sheogorath. With such a strong title, the process of apotheosis is likely in store for the Dragonborn as a part of the story for this expansion.
The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis takes place many years after the conclusion of the main storylines of Skyrim, including Dawnguard and Dragonborn. It will feature all the Daedric Princes' planes of Oblivion and give players a chance to explore them. Players will also be able to interact with all the Daedric Princes and have the choice to ally with them or turn them into enemies. These choices have consequences for Tamriel. The Dragonborn will be able to do this alone or with new characters that can join the Dragonborn on this journey and form different relationships with them, though the nature of these relationships is unconfirmed, and details of the characters have yet to be released.
The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis Brings New Enemies and Characters
The Dragonborn will face both new and familiar enemies in The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis as they travel across Oblivion. Examples of familiar enemies include Seekers from Hermaeus Mora's realm of Apocrypha, the Watchers of Cold Harbour, and the Dremora under Mehrunes Dagon's command. New enemies include Namira's Hungers and Meridia's Aurorans, while other minions that serve the Daedric Princes that haven't been depicted in The Elder Scrolls yet are likely to be depicted.
Rather than Skyrim's linear story structure, The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis has a non-linear approach and allows the player to ally with or battle each Daedric Prince in any order they prefer. Side quests can also be completed during the course of the expansion pack, with no limit on when to complete them.
Player choices will affect the outcome of these quests and the fate of the characters involved.
Dreamsleeve is a completely new realm, original to The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis. Located in the realm is a sanctuary, the Cathedral of the Final Hour, that offers a safe harbor for the Dragonborn. The Dragonborn can improve and customize the Cathedral as they progress through The Elder Scrolls: Apotheosis. As they continue through the expansion, they can encounter lost souls who can be directed to the Cathedral.
