Apart from your chosen character, your weapons are the second most important part of your kit in The First Descendant. Even if you have a max level Descendant, you won't be able to do much damage if your gun can't hurt your enemies. You'll get plenty of weapons as you play the game, and the purple ones you get from missions and enemeis can all roll with different affixes.
If you somehow find a god roll purple weapon, you'll want to save a permanent space in your inventory for it. Even if you start getting stronger guns down the road, you can always improve a weapon that you already own to put it on-par with your current level. Here's how you can level up your gear as you progress through The First Descendant.
How To Level Up Guns In The First Descendant
Improving weapons in this game is very similar to the method used in Destiny 2 — you need to sacrifice a higher-level weapon in order to level up a lower-level gun of your choice. To do this, you need to visit a Workbench in Albion or in any of the safe zones in The First Descendant's battlefields like Kingston and Vespers.
Approach any Workbench, then select the Weapon Level Transmission option. Then, select the gun you want to upgrade, then any high-level gun that you want to use as a sacrifice. Afterward, just hit the Weapon Level Transmission button on the UI, and you'll be good to go.
With that said, weapons here are not improved by simply defeating enemies or completing missions. There's no such thing as Weapon EXP in the game so far, and if you want to level up a low-level gun, you have to farm high-level content in hopes of getting a higher-leveled weapon that you can use as a sacrifice.
Also, you need to get Phase Exchangers from Anais in Albion. These are materials needed for the weapon leveling process at a Workbench. They cost a bit of Gold as well as Super Alloy, a material that you can get by dismantling Common and Rare weapons. If you want to upgrade Ultimate weapons, you'll need Liquid Metal, which is a bit rarer than the former.
You'll naturally get better gear as you progress, and there's no need to rush, especially since you'll need to complete the main questline to unlock The First Descendant's real grind for unlocking characters and Ultimate weapons.
