The First Descendant has announced its brand-new Season 3 update in tandem with a NieR: Automata collaboration reveal. The details were given at PAX East 2025, known as a collection of gaming culture festivals held annually in Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, and Melbourne, during a panel with The First Descendant producer Beomjun Lee.
The free-to-play looter shooter was first released in 2024 by Nexon, and players assume the role of the titular individuals who wield mysterious powers and use them against the invading alien race, Vulgus. The First Descendant dev teased an exciting new Season 3 battle pass reward recently, in a bid to lure players back into the game through a series of major updates, new Descendants, game modes, and more.
The First Descendant Releases a Major New Update
The First Descent releases Update 1.2.14, introducing a new Ultimate Descendant, special event, and more in the looter shooter.
There was plenty to note from The First Descendant’s Season 3 update details, due to launch this summer, including the introduction of a new Massive Field called Axion Plains. The new Hover Bike vehicle was another talking point, designed for high-speed travel, alongside the announced eight-player Colossus Field Raid, and the new social space Lounge feature. Additionally, the new Season 3 Breakthrough story will see the return of Karel, and the new Descendant Nell, who was a former NPC, will be added to the roster as a playable character. Finally, Season 3 will see the new Ultimate Luna, and Sword will appear as a new weapon, joining some of the best weapon types already existing in The First Descendant.

The panel also announced The First Descendant’s collaboration with NieR: Automata, and Lee confirmed the crossover would focus on decorations, saying, “We decided to invest more in the content of Season 3 rather than other content related to the collaboration.” However, the producer added that the A2 and 2B outfits will be accompanied by a damaged version of 2B with no skirt, other motions, and decorations. NieR: Automata exists among the best Square Enix sequel games, serving as a 2017 action RPG from developer PlatinumGames and a sequel to its 2010 predecessor.
Looking to the Drakengard spin-off’s future, the NieR community believes a new game may be on the horizon. A recent report confirmed that director Yoko Taro, musical composer Keiichi Okabe, and former PlatinumGames designer Takahisa Taura were working together on a new project, and many believe this could be the next installment in the NieR series. Even though the new endeavor has not been officially announced yet, an upcoming game sounds promising, considering the IP recently celebrated its 15th anniversary.
