As you scavenge for supplies in The Forever Winter, traversing ravaged battlefields, you'll frequently find yourself surrounded on all sides by deadly foes and vicious war machines. Combat is often a last resort for this exact reason, especially when the larger drones and more heavily armored foes are involved.

Since combat is risky in The Forever Winter, you'll often find stealth the preferable option when navigating the desolate environment. Sneaking past patrols, collecting what you can from containers and corpses, is often the easier option when the alternative is fighting a squad of enemies with your ever-dwindling ammo supply. Despite this, the game's tutorial neglects to mention one very handy stealth tool: the ability to take out enemies from behind silently.

How to Stealth Kill in The Forever Winter

The Forever Winter_Stealth Kill 2

Performing a Stealth Kill is a little tricky, even once you know how to do it. You'll need to get up close behind an enemy, ideally from a crouched position, without being spotted. Since enemies tend to alert each other when they spot you, getting seen by even a single enemy will often result in your target turning around and ruining your attempt.

Once you get up close behind the target, press the melee attack button (By default, this is the Middle Mouse Button or the V Key) to perform a stealth takedown. You'll see a target icon with a skull in it when you're in position to use a Stealth Kill. This will instantly kill most weaker enemies, though it's worth noting that some larger foes (including vehicles and mechs, naturally) cannot be targeted by a stealth takedown. This stealth kill will often take out the enemy without alerting their squad, though this appears to be proximity-based as the attack is not truly silent (unlike silenced weaponry) and it will also lock you into the kill animation until it finished, which can potentially get you into trouble if you choose the wrong moment to strike.

Knowing how to perform a Stealth Kill helps preserve ammo and makes it easier to eliminate enemies without getting yourself hurt, making it a valuable addition to your skill set when navigating dangerous battlefields and narrow tunnels. Using a character that moves faster, like the Shaman, can make it easier to approach enemies from behind and land a stealth kill.
