Summary

  • Fallout won Best Adaptation at The Game Awards 2024, beating Arcane Season 2.
  • Fallout and Arcane were the front-runners in a category of five nominees.
  • Fans are divided over the win, but Arcane Season 2's late release may have impacted its chances.

One of the most competitive races at The Game Awards (TGA) this year was in the Best Adaptation category. Ultimately, Fallout’s first season beat its major rivals for the win.

As video game adaptations improve, the Best Adaptation category at The Game Awards also gets more heated. Geoff Keighley hosts the awards ceremony which honors the best achievements in the gaming industry every year. The Best Adaptation category is a relatively new one for The Game Awards, with it only being introduced in 2022. The past winners of the category include Netflix’s Arcane Season 1 and HBO’s The Last of Us.

The Game Awards 2024 Best Adaptation Winner

At this year’s TGAs, the category was filled with solid adaptations, but in the end, the race was between two major titles: Arcane Season 2 and Fallout. Both were backed with positives that could have led to a win. Arcane is largely considered one of the best-animated series of all time and received a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes for its second season. The series also had a past win in the category and, as Season 2 is the final one of Arcane, this was the last chance for it to be recognized at The Game Awards. Fallout, on the other hand, adapted Bethesda’s massively popular post-apocalyptic open-world franchise, which ended up making huge milestones on Prime Video and scoring well with fans and critics. One thing the two series did share was lead cast member, Ella Purnell, who was in attendance at the ceremony.

  • Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft
  • Winner: Fallout

The award was announced toward the end of The Game Awards 2024 show, with The Last of Us: Part 2 cast member Shannon Woodward and The Last of Us Season 2 star Isabela Merced presenting the category. In the end, Fallout came out victorious and Purnell, along with producers Todd Howard and Jonathan Nolan accepted the award. “I’ve spent most of the evening coming up with ways to heckle Ella for when she won for Arcane,” Nolan joked when accepting the award. The producer proceeded to thank the writers, cast, crew, and studio behind the show, before adding, “I want to thank the fans of Fallout: New Vegas for not burning my house down. You’ll be very glad you didn’t.”

The win was divisive among fans. Many were pleased with Fallout’s win, citing it as an excellent adaptation of the Bethesda franchise. However, many were equally disappointed at Arcane’s loss. Part of the reason for Fallout winning over Arcane could be to do with the fact that the Netflix series’ second season was still airing in the middle of The Game of Awards voting period. Arcane released its final act on November 23, which brought things to a satisfactory end for many, although there were some complaints about the pacing of the second season overall. It’s possible that this recency bias had an impact on Arcane’s chances at winning at The Game Awards, but it still made it a very competitive category this year.

Fallout is available to stream on Prime Video.
