Summary

  • Remember to go prone and crawl on the floor to avoid enemy detection. Use tall grass as camouflage.
  • Craft shivs to escape from clickers and prevent instant death scenes.
  • Watch out for stalkers hiding in dark areas and fungal growths. Use silenced weapons or a bow to kill them before they attack.

Mistakes are bound to happen in a game that can be as stressful and tense as The Last of Us Part 2. The game goes to great lengths to blur the lines of right and wrong, with Ellie’s vengeful odyssey taking extreme lengths that will often compromise players, and even the more extreme mistakes could cause a game over and a checkpoint restart. If players want to endure and survive in The Last of Us Part 2, avoiding these beginner mistakes might be just what they need.

The Last Of Us 2: Every Type Of Infected & How To Beat Them

The Last of Us Part 2 adds new variants of infected enemies, but despite their horrors, there are some easy ways of how to beat them.

Infected aren’t the only threat to Ellie and Abby in their respective journeys through Seattle, and the threat of humans and beyond will keep them on their toes. Yet, players have the wits and the equipment they need to smash through these hordes as Joel did years prior.

6 Forgetting To Go Prone

Hide In Tall Grass By Holding The Circle Button

Many encounters in The Last of Us 2 will harbor a strong sense of difficulty, and many avenues that players can take to counter the enemies that they face. Something they might forget is that they can go prone, and crawl around on the floor, avoiding the enemy's gaze. This can help players control the recoil of their weapons, and to avoid patrols thanks to tall grass.

Considering there are no gardeners in the post-apocalypse, tall grass is everywhere, and players will be able to hide within it, submerging their bodies in camouflage as they wait for their enemies to pass by, or reach a vulnerable spot away from others.

5 Refusing To Craft A Shiv

Shivs Can Help Players Escape Clickers

Shivs can be crafted in The Last of Us Part 2, and they certainly should. Not only can they be used to open certain doors, but they can also save players from certain deaths. If players are grabbed by a clicker, they will instantly enter a death scene in which the clicker overpowers them and takes a big chunk out of their neck with one violent bite.

Players can avoid this death by having a shiv on hand, as this will give players a quick window of opportunity to stab the clicker and free themselves. Clickers only have one method of attack, and that’s to grab the player, so keeping a shiv means that they have a way out in case they succeed.

4 Not Checking For Stalkers

Stalkers Can Hide Behind Corners And Within Fungal Growths In Walls

abby and lev being jumped by a stalker

Stalkers are a new enemy type in The Last of Us Part 2, and they can be found in darkness, hiding behind walls, corners, and other objects to try and get the drop on the player. Stalkers are violent and skittish, meaning they will avoid players until they have an opportunity to ambush them or use a surprise attack. Even worse, they can even hide themselves in fungus, embedding themselves within the overgrown mushrooms on walls, and get a gross mess of mushrooms on the best outfits for Ellie and Abby.

Going near them will free them from their supposed entrapment, and players can use silenced weapons or a bow to kill them before they break free and alert the hordes. Failing to do so will see many infected attack the player, including the fast and agile group of stalkers.

3 Using The Wrong Weapon For The Job

Don’t Waste Hard-Hitting Bullets On Enemies Without Armor

As players navigate through The Last of Us Part 2, they will find plenty of weapons during their chapters as both Abby and Ellie. Their guns can be of great use, but some of them are definitely better than others. Each weapon serves a different use, and it would be unwise for players to just use any weapon against any enemy, especially when some are more effective than others.

The Last Of Us 2 Remastered: 6 Interesting Details In The Lost Levels

Naughty Dog has released 3 Lost Levels into The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and they provide a unique insight into the game's design and characters.

When it comes to infected, something like a flamethrower will do the trick, as the fire quickly burns at the fungus. When it comes to human enemies, a quick and decisive headshot from a bow or a silenced weapon helps without alerting others. It would be a mistake to use something like a shotgun or a hunting rifle, as these hit hard and can be used to chip away the armor of clickers, bloaters, and shamblers, so wasting ammo on an enemy who can just as easily fall to a brick to the face would be a mistake.

2 Lacking Crafting Supplies

Always Loot Each Area To Craft Essentials

A mistake that players might make is forgetting to loot the area before moving on. Players can find plenty of supplies in multiple buildings and on the bodies of fallen enemies. Whether it’s ammunition, rags, bottles, or more, players can f ill their bags up with essential supplies that will make the next encounter even easier.

It’s always best to craft things that are situational, like medkits, molotovs, and bombs. To avoid not being able to craft anything, it’s always best to keep a few supplies handy and to craft more items when players wind up with a full inventory, so as not to leave behind anything.

1 The Usefulness Of Bottles And Bricks

Throwables Can Stun Enemies, Allowing Them To Be Grabbed

ellie throwing a bottle and a wolf

Whilst bricks and bottles might not be as effective as a bullet, they do have a grand usefulness. Players can find these items almost anywhere, and they can be used to either distract enemies, drawing them into a location to investigate what made that noise, or they can be used as a weapon. Throwing bricks and bottles will always stun enemies, other than bloaters and shamblers.

When stunned, players can run in for a quick kill, whether that’s a strike to the face with a melee weapon, a shot to the head, or a grab and execution. If players time it right, they can stun enemies in stealth with a brick or a bottle, meaning that even when caught, they can still win.
