While fans are still recovering from The Last of Us season 2 coming to an end only a few weeks ago, season 3 chatter is already in the pipeline as the show's creators finally reveal what's in store for viewers when the post-apocalyptic HBO series rolls back around. Throughout the highs and many lows, season 2 of The Last of Us saw Joel and Ellie's world turned completely upside down as the pair were drawn into conflict with each other, as well as a world even more unpredictable than the one they left behind in season one.
After an emotional but more relaxed penultimate episode of The Last of Us season 2, which saw Joel return in flashbacks, the finale of the show's second season took a deeper dive into Ellie's revenge against the WLF in Seattle. Fans also got to see a deeper level of Joel's usually stoic personality due to how his father shaped his view of the world when he was a teenager, which makes more sense about why he took on a fiercely protective role in the following years during the outbreak. Although many of Joel's actions were rooted in fear and wanting to do the right thing to protect those he loved, the fallout from this was often dire, as fans saw when he killed Abby's father in a bid to rescue Ellie from the Firefly hospital. Now, as viewers wonder what dark turn season 3 will take for Abby and Ellie, the show's creators confirm a clearer picture of its narrative.
Last of Us Season 2 Viewership is Way Down, and I'm Not Surprised
The Last of Us HBO series viewership is on the decline, and there are some clear reasons as to why that is.
Last of Us TV Show Creator Confirms Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Will Take the Reins in Season 3
During the recent Emmys FYC event (reported by The Hollywood Reporter), which celebrated the second season of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann finally confirmed what fans of the video game already knew and that's that Kaitlyn Dever's character Abby will be the main focus of season 3, leaving Ellie to take a backseat. For those who haven't played The Last of Us Part 2, this news means that fans will see Abby Anderson's perspective of events, the same as viewers did with Ellie, when the show shifts into its third season. Druckmann also revealed that they were shocked that the network allowed them to change the show’s framework and gave them complete creative freedom going forward for the series.
“But the decisions are just what the story required, and even now, it’s like I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way. Meaning, like we just ended season two, and season three is going to be starring — spoiler alert — Kaitlyn.”
In addition to confirming that Abby will be the star of the show in season 3 of The Last of Us, Druckmann and Mazin also hinted at what fans can expect when its third installment returns. “It’s more of a water season than a fire season,” Druckmann expressed, while Mazin confirmed, “It’s a wetter season than a hotter season.” Season 2 of The Last of Us adapted the first section of Naughty Dog's gaming sequel, which showcased Ellie's thirst for revenge after the events of Joel's death as she and Dina headed to Seattle but in season 3, viewers will see the flipside of the coin and relive the same 3 days in Seattle as Ellie did but from Abby's perspective.
Fans already knew that season 3 of The Last of Us was already in the bag, and that it would very likely revolve around Abby, as the video game depicted, but now that we have a solid answer to season 3's narrative, fans will be holding their breath in anticipation of how the show will adapt Abby's dire story as her life becomes even more complicated than ever before.
