The Last of Us fans only currently have just over a month before season 2 hits HBO, and now with a brand-new trailer having been released that showcases more of what's in store, it looks as though one important detail from the game has finally made it to the show. This time around, viewers will not only be introduced to new characters, like Abby Anderson and Catherine O'Hara as Gail, but the series will also extend its storyline with elements that weren't seen in Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part 2.

Fans already know that The Last of Us season 2 will differ in areas from the game and look to expand on characters like Eugene Linden, played by Joe Pantoliano. In Season one, this can be seen with Bill and Frank, who didn't have a huge role to play in The Last of Us, with Frank not appearing at all, but showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin crafted a stunningly beautiful and heartbreaking narrative for the pair that offered gamers a glimpse into characters lives that they wouldn't have seen without the show. As a little bit more is revealed about Season 2, all thanks to the latest trailer, fans get a sneak peek at how the deadly virus has evolved from season one of The Last of Us.

The Last of Us Season 2 Includes Spores to Further the Spread of the Virus

The latest trailer for the return of the HBO show has teased fans with the introduction of spores. Spores were left out of The Last of Us season one and replaced with the ghastly and stomach-churning tendrils seen coming out of infected people's mouths in a bid to further the spread of the virus. In the trailer, Ellie can be seen walking toward someone who has been infected, whose breath releases a plume of spores. Ellie also isn't wearing a gas mask as she can't get infected, but as far as the games are concerned, she was the only character immune to the deadly virus.

Recently, the cast and showrunners of the series made an appearance at SXSW to talk about The Last of Us season 2 and to provide a little bit of insight into this season's upcoming threats. Neil Druckmann did confirm that the "escalation" of the virus in season 2 would also spread via airborne spores, just like in the game. "Season 1, we had this new thing that wasn’t in the game of like these tendrils that spread, and that was one form. And then this one shot you see in this trailer, there are things in the air,” said Druckmann.

Druckmann elaborated further by stating that there will be “a dramatic reason of introducing it now.” Although it remains to be seen what this could mean for Season 2 of The Last of Us, it does indicate that its world has become a lot more dangerous and that being careful not to get bitten will also coincide with being cautious about the air the characters breathe in. It's certainly an exciting time for The Last of Us fans going into season 2 to witness the terrifying airborne virus that plagued the game has now finally made it into the show at last.

The Last of Us season 2 will be released via HBO on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
