Summary

  • The Legend of Vox Machina was renewed for Season 4 ahead of Season 3's conclusion.
  • Continued seasons depend on viewership, encouraged by the cast to boost numbers.
  • The past season release pattern indicates viewers may have to wait at least a year for Season 4.

Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina has only just concluded on Prime Video, but there’s already good news for fans of the adult animated fantasy series.

The Legend of Vox Machina brings to life the first Dungeons & Dragons campaign from Critical Role. The series sees Critical Role team members Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, Travis Willingham, Liam O’Brien, Matthew Mercer, Taliesin Jaffe, Sam Riegel, and Marisha Ray, all reprise their roles as their characters from the campaign. The series is animated by Titmouse which has also worked on Scavenger’s Reign and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Set in the fictional land of Exandria, The Legend of Vox Machina focuses on an unlikely group of heroes who set out to save the land from dark forces. The animated series has adapted different arcs from Critical Role’s 115-episode campaign, with notable stories covered in the first three seasons, including the Briarwood massacre and the Chroma Conclave.

Ahead of the end of Season 3, Prime Video has announced it’s renewed The Legend of Vox Machina for a fourth season. Cast members Ray, Riegel, Jaffe, and Bailey announced in a video released on X (formerly Twitter). “We hope you have enjoyed The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3, but as it draws to a close we have some amazing news to share… we’ve been picked up for a Season 4!” Riegel said. Despite the renewal, the cast encouraged audiences to continue watching and rewatching Seasons 1 through 3. “Show Amazon that you love us, and we’ll keep making more of these,” Ray added.

Like any TV series nowadays, continued seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina largely depend on views. Amazon doesn’t release its viewership numbers as Netflix does in its Top 10 lists, but it can be assumed The Legend of Vox Machina has done well enough over the last month to earn itself a fourth season. Critical Role already has an inbuilt audience of more than 2.3 million YouTube subscribers and many of them would no doubt also tune in to watch The Legend of Vox Machina as well, boosting its numbers.

As for when Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina may be released, the first three seasons of the animated series have been consistent in releasing about a year apart. Both Season 1 and Season 2 were released in January 2022 and January 2023 respectively, while Season 3 took a little longer, presumably due to the SAG-AFTRA Strike in 2024, and began airing in October 2024. This indicates another season of The Legend of Vox Machina is at least a year away.

However, Critical Role fans also have the Mighty Nein animated series to look forward to, which will adapt the group’s second D&D campaign. A release date for that series is still yet to be announced, but the cast is known to have begun voice recording for the series, which means it may come out before Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina.

The Legend of Vox Machina Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Prime Video.
